If Salem improves on the Haven & Hearth template and becomes a game that is constantly improved, policed (for bots, hacks, illegal vaults, etc.), and becomes a thriving community (which H&H doesn't really seem to be, largely because turnover is so high) then H&H will have been a successful game.

If Salem becomes a successful game, all that proves is that Salem is successful. Apollo 1 caught fire on the launch pad and killed all three crew. The fact that Apollo 11 eventually landed the first man on the moon does not make the first mission any less a failure. The system, sure. H&H itself? No, absolutely not.

I do have some hope for Salem, partly because I'm in love with the setting. I signed up for the beta. My URL:

I find that the excessive natural resource scarcity makes H&H pretty difficult to ever achieve success. New players basically can't do /anything/ of worth, ever, unless they just utterly get struck with ridiculous luck in finding a good soil spot (since everyone requires good soil, being that it leads to parts for so many other things).

And as the game world progresses, it becomes progressively more and more unlikely since claims never expire and people often quit the game without dropping their claims.

I totally agree with having specialized resources like metal be rare -- but soil, a resource required for basically everything in the game -- being difficult to find over ~QL30 without having a large group scouring the ends of the game world for days leaves new players with little reason to continue once they realize they'll never be able to accomplish anything.

Edit - Not that the entire game world should be sporting QL100 soil everywhere, but I think decent or better spots -- like, say, QL 50 -- should be vastly more common.

Eh, its a TEAM game after all.

I built a large village last server, when the admins had abandoned H&H for their new pet project, and every good claim in the majority of the world was claimed with huge, well-establish ghost cities.

My cousins and a bunch of my friends ended up moving our little impromptu settlement waaaaaaaaaaaaay northeast past the boundaries of the player-maps, and we found some pretty good stuff.

Its not IMPOSSIBLE, you just need to know what to look for. Only took us what, a day with 6 people to haul all of our valuables halfway across the entire world and find a great spot to settle?

I finally gave into my friends' pestering, and will be leading a new village, starting from scratch in... 10 minutes. If any other B12ers want to join us, shoot me a PM.

Yep, just restarted. Gathering a small crew of loyal players who won't give me grief down the line. Hence, why I don't recruit from the B12 major populace anymore. Its one thing to want to move, leave, or expand, and its another to be an asshole because you're a little bored.

If you're interested in starting a brand-new village, shoot me a message. We looted a ghost village and found 2 boats, so we've got some crates of tools, seeds, and some other basic goodies that will help up get set up. Right now, Ibid and I are logged out in a forest while traveling across the land straight west in search of a good place to settle. He should log in any moment now, and thus shall begin another fun-filled trip across massive wastes in which we RP to stem the tide of boredom. :P Its strangely interesting how much fun I've been having on this, now that I'm RPing as well as know how everything more-or-less functions.

The first time around, just learning, was an utter bitch >_>

JACKPOT!

Found nearly 30 chickens, two cocks, and 3 chicks while on a food run. NO IDEA why so many, but I'm not complaining!

I started playing DF because of Haven and Hearth.  The strongest weapon in game is called the Battle Axe of the Twelfth Bay :)

I desperately want to play this game, but it bugs up on me. I can make it through the "Haven & Hearth" loading emblem, and my computer's "are you sure you want to run this" crap, but then the game crashes as soon as it starts up. I'm running Windows 7, if that makes any difference.

I would appreciate any help or input you can give.
