Hippo Pack v3: Now with more Hippo!
« on: January 09, 2011, 04:25:39 pm »

Welcome to Hippo Pack v4!

Installation:
  • Unzip the download.
  • Copy the included files and folders into your Dwarf Fortress folder.
  • Copy the text in the add_to_entity_default into your entity_default file with the other permitted workshops/reactions for dwarves or whichever civ you want to add them to.

This package includes:
  • A new domestic animal. Can you guess what species it is?
  • An Engraving workshop where stone and glass blocks can be turned into crafts previously unheard of for those materials. Beds, bins, barrels, buckets, catapult parts, ballista parts, and siege ammo.
  • A Greenhouse workshop where seeds can be cultivated into plants. Seven seeds will yield a stack of four plants.

A sneak peak of features not yet implemented:
  • Machining workshop for expanded metalworks.
  • More stone and glass goods for the Engraving workshop.
  • Rapunzel Workshop for spinning metal into cloth.
  • Enhancements to the Greenhouse workshop to include sprouts and seedlings.
  • A larger Greenhouse workshop for cultivating trees.

Compatibility:
  • This mod does require map regeneration.
  • My naming scheme should prevent interference with other mods. I appended hippo_ everywhere it counts.
  • I have not used any of the new tags yet, so backwards compatibility should not be a problem.
  • Please leave a comment if you have any problems, suggestions, or feedback of any sort.
  • More Embark Dwarves has moved to it's own mod.

This looks good. Those are some nice features.

However, because this package includes the full install of Dwarf Fortress - despite the fact that it does not (yet) feature many drastic changes - I'm tempted to call this a "major mod."

DF2010:List of mods
Quote
Major modifications generally add or change a significant portion of the game, such as adding in new civilizations or altering the placement and properties of the game's metals and minerals. Major modifications normally require a new world to be generated using the modified files before they can be played.

Due to the wide range of modified files, major modifications have high likelihoods of conflicting with each other.

Would this require the generation of a new world in order to use? Is there a high likelihood of conflict with other mods? Many of us already use a major mod of some sort. Since this package already include the full Dwarf Fortress, it seems difficult to combine with a major mod.

I'm just saying that a lite version with only the changed files would be greatly appreciated...

Good points, and one of the purposes of calling this a beta. Consider it done as soon as I get back to my main computer tonight.

I'm sorry, but... a 17 Megabyte download?  :o
And... it comes pre-installed on 0.31.19 ?

The new features are tempting,
but I'll have to pass for now.

What? It should just be the raw files. Nothing preinstalled.

Edit: It also has several copies of the modified executable for more dwarves at embark, but those are .19 specific.

EditEdit: Wow, those executables are 8mb each. If you don't want extra dwarves I'll put up a separate minimal install with just the workshops, reactions, and animal.

I think you will find many here a little.... Untrusting...  When it comes to executable files.  Unless you hex edited the EXE I am betting most will probably prefer the minimal version or one with just the folder structure of where the large install goes.

I think your best bet would be to just zip the files that have changed into the folder structure so they can overwrite any version of Dwarf Fortress they download.

But you know =)

Yeah, they are just hex edited for more dwarves, but it doesn't hurt to be careful. The workshops and such are just the added raw files with proper folder structure already. I'm thinking of permanently branching the mod to keep them separated completely for sanitization's sake.

Edit: This mod has officially been branched.

Since the Hippo Pack has now been separated from the .exe's and only contains changes to raws, is there a good chance that it will work with 31.18?

Off the top of my head, the only thing I can think of that might conflict is the new creature it includes - assuming it contains one or more of the new tokens from 31.19. But I could easily be wrong.

Nope, no new tags so it should work with most of the newer old versions.

Edit: I'd like to hug you for asking such good questions Thundercraft.
