Only military go outside = Civilians stand around in ope
« on: March 25, 2008, 08:42:00 pm »

So, yeah - gobos launch a few ambushes, I set the civvies to go underground and station my military in my fortified courtyard. Some dwarves, because of projects are far out and run down while running in random directions, but 2-3 dwarves just stand around doing nothing, and a bunch of others are standing in the open in the courtyard. I had to conscript them to get them to move.

Bug, or typical dwarven Darwinist stupidity?

Either way I've found a nice choke point for a boarder fort - going to cost me alot of war dogs tho, or so I expect.

Are they in a meeting activity zone ? It happens to me too sometimes when I have an outdoor meeting zone and tell them to stay inside. You can make them go inside by marking an inside meeting zone. They'll relocate there as soon as you do.

If I miss forbidding 1 sock, my dwarves go nuts at the entrance.

"I want to go get that sock!" "But I need to stay inside!" "But I REALLY want that sock!"

"I want to go get that sock!" "But I need to stay inside!" "But I REALLY want that sock!"

"I want to go get that sock!" "But I need to stay inside!" "But I REALLY want that sock!"

Which leaves a pile of dwarves running back and forth just outside the entrance of my fort.

My dwarves will rarely retreat when i tell them to stay inside.  Ones inside will not go out, but dwarves outside will stop in their tracks, only to flee in random directions if goblins (or whatever) gets too close to them.

Nope - atleast one guy was standing in the middle of a field halfway across the map for a while, not moving, no job. Others were scattered about.

Well, the ones standing in the courtyard were probably a conflict with a meeting area, but that's not really my concern.

In other news the gobbos found a way past my choke point(then again after I fixed it) and have been ambushing me for most of the last year - lots of deaths, including some legendaries, and the Mayor's mate. Some channeling should resolve the issue, just as soon as the dwarves clean up the mess.

I have the same problem as the OP - if I change orders to "Soldiers can go outside" while civilians are already outside, said civilians (possibly all of the ones outside or possibly only some, I'm not sure) will cancel their current jobs and stand still until something, such as the approaching goblin horde, causes them to move.

Ditto...

I have learned the hard way that you should never, ever use that command.

Odd. On my current game (38c) I've used the "Soldiers can go outside" option a few times in goblin sieges and never ended up with regular dwarves stranded outside. If they're far from the fortress, they'll run their little butts back to it without a problem.
On the other hand, I have had them do the shuffle repeatedly trying to run out to get items outside and canceling once they get a few squares away from the doors.

had the same problem with a child, he just stood around outside while the goblin horde (actually just an ambush) marched at him. Fortunately my soldiers managed to intercept the goblins, unfortunately he got kidnapped 2 min later after the soldiers left.
