A Problem In Egypt
« on: January 09, 2011, 01:37:28 am »

On New Years day a bomb was set off in or near a Christian church. A group with ties to Al-Qaieda has been suspected. And over the next several days there were mass riots between the Christians and the Muslims. The situation is bad. Very bad. This could degenerate into an Al-Qaeda war on Christianity in the Middle East. Which will probably drag a super power or two in with it.

Your take on this?

Note:This thread is for the purpose of discussing this situation, if you enter this thread you will have to keep yourself on a tight leash, this will not turn into a flame war, if I see something that I think is or is going to be a problem then it's will be considered gone.

I don't get why we even NEED hate crime lists. Anybody who discriminates another person for any reason based on race, religion, beliefs, or anything similar (as in anything similar to "not being like me") should still be guilty of a hate crime regardless. Within reason of course. If you "believe" in discrimination, that doesn't count.

Seriously, I can get having exclusions for them (racism for example), but come on.

I am happy this goes in the news. Persecution of christians have been a reality for quite some time in Egypt and other places in the world as well, and I hope this will start a change. At least what happens is better known and more action can be taken toward peace, which is always good ; I'd really like these countries to become more peaceful and happy.

I don't think things are likely to change (in good or bad) but one can always hope. :)

I think the problem will get worse before it gets better. Currently this group is probably making bombs right now.

Well, at this rate, at some point in the near future there won't be any Christians or Jews left to blow up...

If the Christians and Jews respond in kind then I think the world will be out of Muslims.

What makes me mad about all this is the the Muslims have essentially attempted a holy war, or Jihad as it were, on Christianity. And the only difference is that they added another prophet to the list.

They've been doing that since the late 19th century I think. It's at least not something novel or surprising.

It's not applicable to all Muslims.

Don't be silly, if the Muslims were at war, you'd know it.
There is one person out of six on the planet that is registered "Muslim".

In the case of the Middle-East, the difference between peace, truce, smoldering conflict, border tensions and all-out war is often hard to see, and it's made more complicated by the fact that the Shiites and Sunnis hate each other as much as they hate Jews and Christians, Iraqi's and Iranians hate each other no matter their religion and Syria likes to bully Lebanon around whenever it's given the chance. And that's without mentioning the Palestinians who're pretty much second-grade citizens in every country they ended up in so far, the Kurds who've got pretty much the same status, the Israeli's, who have the same status but a few nukes to deter people from speaking their mind, the former Soviet Republics in the region who hate big daddy Russia with a vengeance, the Pakistanis who hate the Indians and have nukes, and the Afghans who just plainly hate everyone by now*.

*I've probably omitted some other conflicts, like the Berbers and Iran's struggle with Afghan drug dealers, but I'm not an expert on the Middle-East, so please excuse me

The middle east is a confusion of racial hatreds. Sunnis and Shiites. Muslims and Jews. Muslims and Christians. Iranian Muslims and Pakistani Muslims. Iranian Muslims and Turkish Muslims. It's like the Balkans, only worse because they have more money for it. And then terrorists take the Qu'ran and distort it completely to justify their wars. Mix that with hatred for the Turks from being part of the Ottoman Empire and with the 'decadent' west for the occupation and CIA puppets of the second half of the 20th century and you get this. The clusterfuck of hatred we see today.
