I wonder why dwarves will randomly stop digging in one room to run across the whole fortress to dig one square in another room.

That's part of the great Dwarven superstition called The Left Corner.  According to this belief, all activities must be decided upon starting from the top left corner of the map and working their way right and down.  Meaning if they find something they can do that's far far FAR away but further left of where they are now, they're most likely going to go that way before they go right or down.  This has infuriated many a stockpile designator who has carefully placed precious materials for crafting only a few feet to the right of or below a Dwarf's workspace, yet they won't touch it because there's a chunk of claystone 50 levels down but 1 tile to the left of their workshop.

I wonder why they run all the way to the other side of the fort and then back to the same room from a different route to mine a block they were standing right next to from the other side.

That's another facet of their Left Corner superstition.  It's considered unlucky to work on a job from any other direction if it can be approached from the left at all.  If they have to (ie. they can't reach a spot from the left), they'll work from the top, or from the bottom if that's also inaccessible, but the only way they'll start from the right is if there's simply no other option.

So you simply make it to where the stuff you want it to be made from is in the left corner.

Problem solved?

Also: Why did you have to beat that Reces Maraques to death with your crossbows? I made sure that everyone would have at least 25 bolts.

I wonder why my immigrants when they first arrive have blinking X's on them, and sit in the middle of my base, staring at the locals. 8)
I supose they just kind of walk in and look at the ceiling, waiting for somebody to smack 'em on the head. ::)

I have found that you have to set their labor prefrences before they actually start to do stuff.

Yes, thus the local having to slap the back of the head. But even after I told them what to do they sat there for a while.

Migrants always do that, labor preferences be damned. When they arrive, the first thing they do is bolt for the meeting hall and chill out. You know, unwind from the long journey and whatnot.

Back on topic: I've always wondered why my militia commander insists on taking off his greaves, then immediately putting them back on, every single time I have his squad stationed. Is he debating the virtues of going commando or something?

it was a cabinet wiht a picture of itself on it,

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

Dwarves don't get more skilfull with practise, they get more honest. If you examine the pockets of your newbie miners you'll find lots of stolen chunks of mineral.

I knew those several tons of basalt had to be around here somewhere!  Urist...empty your pockets.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

Why is it that my dwarves will refuse to place a barrel on-top of a pile of seeds (or even another barrel) even if they are going to put the seeds into the barrel when they are done?
