The game's running slow for some reason

Maybe I shouldn't use a tileset, but when I try to run Dwarf Fortress it runs way slower than the Lets Play videos seem to run.  Does it really need a good computer?  I was primarily trying to get into this game because I don't have a good computer.

Yeah, it needs a good computer. I started playing on a netbook, and after all the FPS-saving tweaks I made, I was getting 25 FPS on embark.

Good computer is a junk term, but you mainly need a good processor to get a lot of things going smooth.

Equals LIQUID NITROGEN-COOLED SUPERCOMPUTER WITH 10 TB OF RAM

There are a lot of tricks floating around to raise FPS though. DF runs in a single core too, which is something to consider.

Yeah, don't let the graphics fool you, DF rides computers harder than most modern high-budget games. There's a looooot to calculate.

DF runs on a single core, which means a 2.6ghz quad core isn't much better than a 2.6ghz single core. IIRC, an i7 chip will help a moderate amount due to some sort of dynamically allocated overclocking built into the architecture (turning up one core way up and others way down, using the excess cooling capacity to cool the overclocked one).
