In France no death in the last mass riot. Four dead in Greece, and those are the biggest in the recent years in Europe.
May I also know how those riot would have been better if everyone involved had a gun?

I'm not saying "Guns for all!" I'm saying "Guns for the qualified."

Every European country have a "gun for the qualified" law.
In France, in order to have a decent gun, you must have 6 month at the shooting range + no history+ no psychiatric problem.
Then you can have even an handgun.

More info, in French.

For those among you that don't speak french: Basically if you want a handgun, you first need to have an attestation from your shooting range saying that you have a reason to own a gun. Then you have to go to the police and ask for a permit. The police will first perfrom an enquiry about you, then deliver you the permit, which must be renewed every 5 years.

Did this turn into a debate over the right to bear arms?

What qualifies as a reason? I'm guessing that simple desire to own a weapon isn't one of them?

Probably not. I wouldn't be surprised if living in or near a crime-high area was one, though.

France is very socialist though. They aren't fond of guns, so I doubt it is a reason. What about hunting? Is it even legal in France?

In all but North Ireland you can't have a gun for self defense in the U.K.

Pretty much all Europe has laws like that and are equally tight.

Pretty much only Scandinavia has "gun freedom". Only America and most African countries actually have guns for self defense and whatnot. And Africa has them mostly for defense against animals.

Guns are legal in Canada, you just need a permit to own one.

No, nor does living in an high crime area. I don't know if owning a shop in such area qualify, bu you can have non semiauto 22long rifle caliber rifle without so much hassle.  Something like "he does competition" work though.
You'd be amazed, but most poeple here actually realize that owning weapon isn't a good way to deter criminality, so most opposition to these law come from hunter annoyed at the paperwork .
Hunting is legal, and a reason to have a gun (only allowed with hunting rifle of course, who the hell think that hunting with an handgun is a good Idea?).
France isn't socialist since at least three mandate.

Edit, I forgot, we don't have dangerous animals here, exept a few snakes in some region. No need for guns to deter bear or alligators.

Handgun hunting is fairly popular in America.

And guns themselves aren't meant to deter criminals. Word on the street that one of them was killed in a burglary is.

I'm no expert on this, but I believe the only guns you can legally possess here in Iceland are hunting rifles. Your average policeman doesn't have as much as a handgun, either, there's only one squad allowed to handle them.

Anyway, guns are pretty lousy "self-defense" weapons. It takes time to draw them, after all, and you can be shot before you can even notice your attacker. It's a bit harder to kill someone with a knife, but still easily possible, so it's not like a lack of guns will deter determined killers.

An object that shoots up to an ounce of lead at an enemy at several hundred miles per hour is a bad self defense weapon?

And there is a shortage of "determined killers" in case you couldn't tell.

If it's anything like the law here, range-shooting is reason enough, though it limits you to range-valid weapons (AKA: no handguns below a certain size). We (my father and I) got our licenses that way. We needed to go to at least one competition every year, and renew every three years, though. I let my license drop because I didn't have time to keep doing that once I started university.

PD: I just remembered that France's law is actually more liberal than here, as one-shot guns can be purchased without a license, I think
