I'm just going to express my condolences, because I'm above using the deaths of, among others, a federal judge and a child as ammunition to attack my political opponents.

All things, no matter how small, are politics, your statement included.

6 dead including a child, 18 others injured is being reported now. The congresswoman will survive by the sounds of it, although considering their description of her wounds as having gone through her brain, she probably won't ever fully recover.

While the former is subject to debate, objecting the first point or rejecting it as a political argument is ridiculous.
You mean latter, don't you? Former means previous, or first.

And yeah, this is what you get for putting, of all things, crosshairs on people.

Well... if she's survived, I guess Sarah Palin will get to explain why she thought it was a good idea to put a crosshair over her with the slogan "Help us prescribe the solution".

I don't know why I'm watching these YouTube videos.  Well, no, I know why.  Because I believe everything can be understood, if not within rational logic then at least within its own logic.  And anything that can be understood can be dealt with.  These videos are virtually beyond comprehension.

Take for example, this gibberish.  Most of Loughner's hieroglyphic webcasts take the form of elementary logical statements, a bit like Venn diagrams.  "A and B are true.  If A and B, then C is true.  Therefore C is true."  The problem is, he keeps reiterating his logical followthrough, without ever making the slightest attempt to explain why A and B are true.  For instance, tuition is unconstitutional, and this community college charges tuition, therefore this community college is unconstitutional.  But Mr. Loughner, why is tuition unconstitutional?  He's also apparently not very good at math, and got kicked out of school a lot, for interrupting classes to make his... case.

It's a classic case I suppose, that he's so convinced of his own understanding of the world, that he not only thinks it's criminally irrational to perceive the world any other way (enough to go exact his own justice apparently), but it doesn't even enter into his head to mention the fact.  The world is what it is, there is no other way of describing or explaining anything, everyone can see this exactly the same way, but there's all these people, who are simultaneously a ruling elite and a brainwashed majority, who refuse to acknowledge that the way they think is wrooong.  Something must be done.

He also apparently has some serious grammar issues - one might think his poor typing and syntax is just that, like anything else on the Internet, but maybe that's how he actually talks.  He simultaneously believes that people are illiterate if they don't understand English grammar, but you can also invent your own grammar.  To stick it to the man, or something, even though there is one right grammar...  I keep thinking I can hold onto his line of logic.  That there is a thread in there to grasp and follow out of the labyrinth.  But it keeps slipping just out of reach.

This guy's going to draw me in and destroy my mind, like an autistic Hannibal Lecter.  Somebody help me out here.

Don't think this guy is Tea Party. He's even nuttier than they are. We're talking Time Cube nutty.

Been busy as shit the last couple hours as the Bureau responds to this, even though FBI has lead. At this point, the toll appears to be six dead, 18 wounded. Congresswoman Giffords is amazingly alive, but still in critical condition. Shooter is in custody. No real details yet as to motive or weapon, other than it being a semiautomatic.

Possible indications that the Congresswoman was not the main target, although that's still speculative.

EDIT: Between this and the incendiaries in DC/Maryland, it's been a hell of a few days. Little too much 1995 deja vu for me.

Just out of curiousity RedKing, you work for the Fed?

On topic, I'm just not going to say anything on the politics right now. Still trying to digest all this. There was a shooting not two days ago in Omaha, next town over from me. The incendiary packages and such on top of that....

Yeah, it's feeling like the mid 90s again. I will say I hope this makes everyone reconsider bringing their civilian AR to political rallies. Somehow, I kind of doubt it though. It'll probably have the opposite effect.

Like someone earlier said, it's Time Cube logic.  But I fear the political class will use this to clamp down on civil liberties.

But Timecube just asserts everything, yelling it at you.  Ok, it's weird, but you can tell his thread of logic.  For this guy... man, it's extremely hard to even know what could've possibly been going through his head.

And one of his videos suddenly starts talking about delivering his new currency "lethally".  Maybe... theres' some kind of bizarre metaphor in there?

Why.  Please tell me why you fear that, so I calm you down and explain that you have nothing be afraid of.  Because trust me, you don't.

Except for armed space-cadets apparently.

EDIT: There was a lengthy news conference with the local sheriff that deserves a listen, both for his somewhat remarkable statements for a law-enforcement official, and also for his descriptions of the attacker.  Apparently the guy was known by the law for previous events, but probably nothing rising to significant charges.  It is known that the local law enforcement has records that he previously made death threats against other people.  From the New York Times Liveblog-

Quote from: Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik
The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on this country is getting to be outrageous and unfortunately Arizona has become sort of the capital. We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry. ... The vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business ... This has not become the nice United States that most of us grew up in.

I can't honestly say that I agree with him.  Not least because Loughner's best attempts to explain himself mention nothing particularly "topical", except for his belief in the gold-standard, and his screeds about grammar, that sound more like his own personal issues with schooling than anything racial.  What makes the quote remarkable is that this was a sheriff giving the status report on the incident, a ceremony usually devoid of politics of any kind.  Your reactions are your own.

Gabrielle Giffords was also the Congresswoman chosen to read aloud the text of the First Amendment the other day, during the grandstand reading of the Constitution in the capitol building the other day.  I was originally going to make a thread about the comedy of errors that was the proceeding, but that would be... unnecessary now.
