Try gargling warm, heavily-salted water. It helps when your throat is sore. Don't swallow it, obviously.

Ginger ale is great. And if you have an infection, try the chemical warfare option. Hydrogen peroxide.

Yeah, I used to gargle with it/use it on my wounds, but then I heard that it apparently can cause some serious scarring problems along with burning like hell.

So I don't use it anymore, except in particularly necessary occasions.

While sick myself, I've been drinking a lot of V8 vegetable juice.  I don't know if it "helps" or anything, but among the few things that I can still tastes and tastes good.

How does H2O2 mess up your teeth, though? I'm not finding that obvious.

I think I'll stick with alcohol.
On that note, rubbing alcohol makes horrible impromptu mouthwash.
Taste stayed in my mouth for at least 12 hours.

I want to say that it's just too harsh to use commonly, and there's not much reason to do it. However, I'd like to see information on H2O2 dissolving enamel, as I've never heard of that before. I can see it causing irritation to soft tissue, but I don't see why it would dissolve enamel of all things, or for that matter, dissolve much that water can't. I'm doing some cursory reading on this, and it seems that peroxide-based whitening agents don't really have an effect on the structural properties of teeth, and a hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse is certainly weaker than that (about 1.5% concentration). Hell, maybe that was your part of your problem; you're supposed to dilute the stuff, and you didn't. That, and using that stuff every day probably caused a bit of irritation to your mouth.

Seriously, I've never heard of H2O2 as being a very useful solvent. I swear you're thinking of some other substance.
