Brand new world, under the newest version.  Come summertime in the second year, I get a message that a human caravan has arrived, and I see the first cart rolling down my road.  While they approach, I scroll back into my fortress, scrambling to get goods dragged to the depot and, hopefully, a few more crafts done and carted over.  I then scrolled back over to the road...and poof.  Carts, traders, and mules are gone, and the trade depot says there's no merchants trading right now.  

Even weirder, lying in the middle of the road are what appears to be the contents of one of the carts; a pile of meat, leather and cloth bins, and mangrove logs.

Something I just noticed:  on the unit list, a mangrove wagon is listed among the deceased.

Ah, then the trader's  might've been attacked by the wildlife. Enough, at least, to drive them away.

Would you continue if you were coming to a new market and then ELEPHANTS descended on your wagons? It wasn't worth the profit.

The majority of the wildlife here consists of deer and foxes, neither of which are a patch on the single-minded viciousness of the caravan guards.  The worst thing I've seen on this map thus far is a grizzly bear, and the dwarven caravan guards dispatched that with relative ease.  Besides, there were none of the other signs of such an attack--no corpses, no blood, no named animals limping off with a sword still stuck in them.

The wagon might've spontaneously combusted.

Maybe the guards wandered off to kill one cluster and a different group tore apart the wagon, convincing them to leave.

Deer have destroyed my humans' wagons before, much to my dismay.
