I wonder what she thinks of the new opening, then?

In regard to the tech level of the setting, they seem to have electricity. In The Show Stoppers the Cutie Mark Crusaders use an electric fan to generate wind for part of their act.  Additionally, Celestia apparently has a microwave.

Of course, its entirely sensible for them to have electricity even if their general tech level is medieval. Given that the pegasi have the ability to control the weather, it stands to reason that experimentation with lightning would have started taking place very early in their civilization, leading to the early development of simple electrical technologies (Up to things such as fans and motors and such; (possibly also things such as simple vacuum tubes, given Twilight's analytical apparatus in Feeling Pinkie Keen)).

If we're taking toys as canon, then Applejack has a pink apple shaped truck :P

And if we absolutely positively HAD to have an electrical appliance (which we often did), I just told myself that it was enchanted by some magical unicorn mechanic at some point.  However, I insisted that such an attitude was to be considered only as a last creative resort - don’t use a light switch when you could use a candle, just because you’re feeling lazy.  Don’t draw a hoof unnaturally and awkwardly wrapped around an umbrella because you don’t feel like thinking about it a little more. Overall, though, it was definitely not a strict approach - and it’s hardly consistent.  Humor and ease of storytelling took precedence over technicality.

Unfortunately, I think that it could be argued that the toys are technically more canonical than the TV show.

So I guess under this interpretation the apparatus that Twilight tried to use to scan Pinkie's brain in Feeling Pinkie Keen would be analogous to HEX from the Discworld novels.

If the ponies ended up on earth, Twilight would probably fall in love with computers.

And then go on a rampage when she found out we're destroying books because they're becoming outdated.

Oh god, remind me never to go to ponychan again.

Naught but neighsayers, neighsayers about neighsayers, and... that's about it. I *did* get one guy to respond to my points about lesson zero, but I also got about 4 people trying to shoot me down with condescending quips. Also, most the topics were "let's try to explain this animation error" or "what's the worst pony design" or "oh man there's going to be a lot of whiners about luna next week" and stuff like that.

Or maybe I should just stay out of /pony/. Maybe for another time.

I just looked up "friendship_is_magic" on Google accidentally and the first thing that popped up was paheal.net. Fot those of you who don't know, that's pretty much an image site dedicated to rules 34 and 63 on EVERYTHING. The fact that it came up first, though...

At least I know I'm not alone <.< >.>

I'll be honest, the Rule 34 pony stuff doesn't bother me. Of course, a big part of that is because I follow the Molestia tumblr (among many others) and you kinda have to be okay with it to even glance at that.

The Molestia stuff is more hilarious then it is erotic.  That is my opinion of it anyways.

Obviously whoever is doing it is having fun with it, cause it shows.  Plus, its quality.

Agreed. That stuff isn't the clopping material. There's far better quality stuff on pretty much any site, although e621's the hot spot for the 'explicit for a reason' stuff, especially considering it's mostly a porn board anyway.

What do people think of a Bay 12 pony mascot?  Considering NeoGAF's Bella Eve...

totalitarian vibes from Celestia
let's not forget, shall we, that it's only Twilight who's had any real contact with her and knows her.

Unfortuantely yes, and this episode changed Twilight's character, probably irrecoverably. Previously she's expressed fear and concern for pleasing Celestia that is unjustified by anything Celestia has ever done. Until now.

Think about it: it was always cute watching Twilight overreact about every little detail trying to make Celestia happy, despite her being completely benign and gentle.  But now, Celestia's demonstrated that she can and will at any time magically appear in a ball of light over Twilight's head and start talking about punishment.

That effectively retcons all of Twilight cute, paranoid "overreactions" like in the parasprite episode, to the implication now that there's probably some history there. Twilight might have very good reason to fear the princess and go to paranoid lengths to insure that everything is perfect. Or else.

That's not a good change.

Mmm yeah I'm still not buying the "abusive and mean mentor" thing. She was stern, but if she was prone to overreacting with punishments, I don't think she would've tried to be comforting in the library.

"Twilight, you are a wonderful student. I don't need to get a letter every week to know that."

The only thing that really bothered me was Spike
breaking the fourth wall with the backdrops

Agreed. That's Pinkie's job. Spike shouldn't be doing that. Lauren Faust actually commented in one of her interviews that she made a point to specifically keep Pinkie's Pinkieness to Pinkie, rather than letting everyone in on zanyness. It's unfortuante that one of Jayson Thiessen's first acts as lead director was to change the rules about that. Apart from letting the ballons go and her perspective teleport at the picnic, Pinkie was pretty much forgotten this episode.

Quote
Personally, I think its a bit silly to be declaring
doom and gloom on the Season two at episode three.

This was the first episode produced by Jayson Thiessen instead of Lauren Faust. In his first episode, he's changed some basic premises of the show, ignored characterization, introduced a whole bunch of visual changes....I understand that new people like to add their personal creative touch, but like some people have pointed out, some of the things he's changing are potentially very destructive to the show if they become trends.

Quote
I personally enjoyed it, but if every episode was like this? Not so much.

I think that summarizes it. It was ok, it wasn't bad, but more of it would be.

Quote
I've heard estimations that the main 6 are at least in their teens, so he's over 10.

Personally, in humans terms, I'd estimate most of them to be in the 16-22 range, except Rarity who is probably late twenties. But then I also think Rarity is a single mother and Rainbow Dash is a boy. As to Spike, I'd say about 15.

Quote
so now it's slavery and racism in this children's cartoon?

Racism is already established canon. Zecora is an outcast. Celestia and Luna rule. A racially based caste system has been heavily implied: Only earth ponies work in food service industries, for example.

As for slavery, Spike's case could possibly be argued. Remember that Twilight's entrance exam in Cutie Mark Chronicles was to hatch Spike's egg. Obvious implication being that all unicorns at Celestia's school have baby dragon slave/familiars. State-sanctioned racially based child slavery.

Quote
what do you call those? Allicorn?

Seems to be the in-universe convention. Anywhere outside of MLP though, an alicorn is a unicorn's horn.

If they did have a zeppelin

All required technology has been demonstrated. Twilight has a hot air balloon. And in Griffon the Brush Off, Pinkie Pie uses a bicycle powered helicopter. Though, I recall reading in a Faust interview that Word of God was that the verse was officially low tech, but violations due to the Rule of Funny were allowable. So Pinkie's flying machine might be "Pinkie Pie being Pinkie Pie" rather than a canon demonstration of available technology. But, here it is:
