So you can use pretty much any reasonable size without quality loss. Widescreen wallpapers with a zoomed in pony's face wouldn't be possible with lower res images. Beyond that are posters and things.

Yep. If you make a wallpaper too large for some people, they can scale it down without losing quality. Make it too small, and it gets pixelated when you expand it.
