Well, at least Fox says we're better than terrorists.

As for octopus, octopuses and octopodes are correct plurals, but octopi isn't.

Again, we are not speaking Greek or Latin. Octopi is an acceptable plural of octopus because it is an irregular English noun, the same goes for "Pegasi" as a plural of "Pegasus". (Furthermore the root word for pegasus, Πήγασος, theoretically would not need any plural at all as it referred to a unique creature)

(Also, octopodes as a plural for "octopus" is wrong. It is correctly (a transliteration of) the plural of the Greek word ὀκτάπους)

I'm going to refer to that white dragon as "Derpgon" now. Every mural it's in it's making a stupid face.

But it's mistakenly derived from Latin pluralization. I'd say it's acceptable because the usage is in high currency and it isn't really worth the effort to keep our pluralizations in line with Classical Greek. I'll just stick with octopuses, though.

And pegasuses, and hippopotamuses, and huses polluses.

It isn't worth the effort to "keep our plurilizations in line" with any bullshit ideal.

"Bullshit ideal" there presumably used in the meaning of "correct spelling".

But not English spelling. So yeah, it's bullshit.

But the "English" definition is an incorrect attempt to adhere to Latin grammar rules. The proper English one is, indeed, octopuses because it follows English pluralization rules.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

But the rules can change. As they did in Latin, as they did in Greek, as they have done in every language.

I'm not arguing against that, but the plural "octopi" is an attempt to hold to archaic language rules. If you don't want to do that, just move on and use "octopuses". If you want to hold on to those rules, use "octopodes".

Man, this is the silliest argument in a while that I've gotten in. Wooooooo

It's hypercorrection anyway.

But has anyone looked at the story? :P
