About her using the EoH solo and imprisoning her without really wanting to, that I agree with.

>green text denoting the obvious

My personal theory was Celestia was... to be frank, a jerk 1000 years ago. History's written by the winners after all, and the historical account paints Celestia in a little too good a light for me to not be suspicious.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

But if she was a jerk, she apparently stopped being that at some point between 1000 years ago and now, begging the question why she didn't release Night Mare Moon from the moon, turning her to Luna using the EoH herself. It's obvious from their meeting that Celestia missed Luna a lot.

People tend to mature over time.

And since nightmare moon was able to overpower celestia after she broke out, it stands to reason that Celestia either couldn't release Luna or needed a group like Twlight's to be able to subdue her.

I think I might have been a bit unclear there.

I'm not questioning that Celestia might have matured during those 1000 years. What I'm trying to say is that having matured (assuming she was actually missing Luna, something I feel is a good assumption to make), why didn't she release her?

See, having Celestia as a (former) jerk assumes she had control over the EoH 1000 years back. This, in turn, leads to the conclusion that she can still control the EoH (assuming Celestia has not grown weaker over the past 1000 years which is, again, an assumption I think is reasonable). Since Twilight and co. could use the EoH to defeat Night Mare Moon and bring back Luna, it stands to reason that so could Celestia, since she can use the EoH and is more powerful than Twilight and co.

This all leads to the conclusion that she was unable to release Night Mare Moon (and/or defeat her alone) implying that she could not fully utilize the EoH, which in turn means that she is not as all-powerful as she might seem.

Now, having written up all that and reading it myself, it sound an awful lot like we're actually agreeing here, except for the fact that I think Celestia imprisoned Night Mare Moon, more or less permanently, by mistake, and you think that she did it on purpose.

Perhaps 'the stars' are some kind of failsafe for whatever may befall Luna/Nightmare Moon upon the chance that she is to be defeated.  Originally meant to 'resurrect' her if she was to be slain... it also can readjust it self to deal with other problems unforseen problems, but such a thing takes time...

Either that or 'the stars' are controlled by a 'misunderstood' zebra goddess.
