[Akhier the Dragon hearted]

   Its tied to one of the more useful things about my memory. When I start reading a story I already read or watching a show I already have seen or know about my brain shuts off the part of my memory that remembers if the story is good enough so I can always enjoy first impressions over and over. Basicly as I watched I did not know what the elements of harmony really where until they really hinted hard at it with Fluttershy's bit.

No mystery about the plot here. Big party that everyone will want to be at and yet Twilight can only bring a single guest.

Applejack seems to spend a lot of time holding Dash back by her tail so far in the limited amount of episodes I have seen.

Oh, My, God. Twilight actually puts the burden of deciding who goes with her on herself. If she ends up having to choose just one it will be her disaster instead of a group decision

As of Rarity's reason I believe hers is actually the best all considering. After all there is a distinct lack of boys around.

I don't think it ever was indicated, but it DOES make sense. A lot more sense than a "trollestia" ploy.

Twilight always was an introvert without any real friends prior to moving to ponyville, so it's not unreasonable for celestia to think she'd just bring spike.

   I prefer to believe it was a test by Celestia. Twilight passed the test but to hide it was one Celestia acted in a way that to us seems trollish. I refuse to believe that after Celestia basically told her she could stay in ponyville with her friends after Twilight was heartbroken over the thought of leaving them that Celestia does not know what they mean to her.

Edit: If Spike was supposed to be the guest the invitation would have said so as an invitation is in general specific if you know who is coming. If you invite a friend and his sibling over do you tell him that and his sister can come over or that he and a guest can come over?

Episode 26 itself. "I was thrilled when I heard you and your friends were coming." That's always seemed to say to me that she didn't even think Twilight would want to come, let alone her friends. Just a courtesy invitation, and if you want, you can bring Spike. I can see her believing that Twilight would be the only one who might even think of coming, and Twilight without Spike?

I got the impression that it was either a test or Celestia just plum forgot that Twilight had so many friends...

   HOW could she forget? Twilight was in fact guaranteed to have a minimum of 5 friends. It was a requirement for SAVING Celestia.

Between Episode 2 and Episode 3... the only correspondence between Twilight and Celestia was probably by Dragon Mail.  Who knows how long.  A month or two?  Probably only having met the 'friends' once since then?  Celestia is the tyrantruler of Equestria, stands to chance that she could forget such details among whatever else she does.

EDIT: Also, could be based on particular past fact, Twilight is a shut-in with no friends before she sent her out into the world...

By the end of this project I will never want to see Doctor Whooves again in my life.

and it will probably never see the light of day anyway, but if it does, Monkey Island style Doctor Whooves game with just the tiniest dash of Cupcakes.  It's a Doctor Who game with ponies, btw, not the other way around.  I worked it out and I'm going to need about a thousand frames of animation.  My hand hurts, my thumb is wrecked, I have a cold, and I promised to work on a DIFFERENT game this weekend.  FML.  Going back into submarine mode until I have something worth sharing.
