Famale fans don't need a special name.

it's only when you're a guy and you like the show that you're weird.

Actually, "brony" originated from /b/ - specifically the Anons who posted in the endless Pony threads (which are still ongoing to this day). It began as /b/rony, a portmanteau of the respectful word for a fellow /b/ user (/b/ro) and pony. It wasn't until the Great Bannings, in which hundreds of pony fans were banned from 4chan, that the slashes were dropped and it became the word as it is used today.

As it is used today, "brony" is gender-neutral and refers to any MLP:FiM fan regardless of origin.

The pony fans still on /co/ (the few, the proud, the elitist XD) tend to use /co/lt, which is a similar portmanteau of the board's directory and a word relating to equines.

You don't really go to /co/, do you?
Not ever have I saw the word /co/lt anywhere in a MLP general. (I'll make a quick search thru the 413 archives but you're probably lying. Or it was used. Like, once.) Secondly, /co/ is anything but elitistic. You're probably thinking of Ponychan, who bans everyone who doesn't fanatically love ponies.
Seriously, even our trips aren't elitistic. (Unless you mean /co/mmander jesus, but he's just a big, lovable troll.) We do reject anyone who comes to spout their fanaticism though, maybe that's why you meant.

Also, the few, the proud, the elitist? We're a relaxed group who rages over trivial things and 34.

EDIT: Ok, got it from /co/. /co/lts was used briefly at the start when someone thought "we should be like /b/ guise". Unused now. So srsly, what was the last time you've been at /co/?

It's just a title dude, and definitions can change. Words evolve and don't have set meanings.

I don't call myself a "brony" but I wouldn't correct someone if they said I was. Some people don't call themselves "gamers" though they play video games, either.

I've seen several women call themselves "bronies", along with some alternatives like "fillies." I don't think there's a set name.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

And here's my question, why even use all these words? What's the deal with calling yourself bronies and fillies and colts? Why the need to be so pathetic?

I can see why they might be used on 4chan, but outside it? It's just like those morons screaming old memes at each other.

I've been seeing this whole community falling apart for a while now. It's been only 26 episodes so far and look at all the shit. Fanfiction everywhere, Sethisto becoming a hypocrite and backing out on /co/, Ponychan with their constant hugboxing, lesbian shipping (seriously, are they all secretly gay or something? It's creepy.) and RPing and more hypocrisy. We may not be as bad as the Sonic fandom, but we're sure catching up to them. Even /co/ is getting worse.
Me, I'm a normal guy watching cartoons like My Little Pony and Adventure Time. There are a lot of people like me. And look who they got to represent them. Honestly, I wouldn't be suprised if Faust left just because of this. (I know she hated what the community has become, I just don't know if that would be important enough.)

EDIT: Forgot to add the shipping to Ponychan. How could I forgot that.

You seem bitter.

Hell I hate lots of things about the fandom, and have written many a rant about it (mainly the tendancy to rip out every goddamn part of the show and turn it into a meme. I'm sick of hearing "20% cooler" and seeing captioned images with "witty" lines). I wouldn't say it's getting worse, though. Just bigger.

ED's up to what, a million views a week now? The fanbase is growing with no signs of stopping and of course you're going to see all the things that come along with large fanbases.

All the fan created stuff is being hit pretty hard with sturgeon's law, too, though for every 10 crappy europop and techno remixes there's something awesome. I assume it's the same with the quality of fanfiction/etc. That's not really something to rage about; yeah there's more and more shit being made, but more and more good stuff too.

Perhaps. But no, I'm just overreacting. /co/ is cool and there's always something going on, even if it is just ... (actually, I'm not naming him, he's a cool trip and I don't wanna get him in trouble over that.) ... extorting money from Ponychan. I don't hate it completely. As long as /co/ doesn't get bad, we still have a useful community.

Still, just because it's getting bigger shouldn't mean it necesarilly needs to be worse. Supporting that kind of stuff is bad. There are a lot of cartoons that don't have a furry community. Seriously, giving up and just accepting it is not good.

Actually, it's EqD, in order to not mess it up with Encyclopedia Dramatica. And popular opinion has never meant quality.

Except the sturgeon's revelation (not law) is false here. The 90%/10% aren't evenly distributed. You have awesome videos and poops, next to all shit fanwanks, with pics that are somewhere 30% ponychan meme shit but mostly good.

Hell I hate lots of things about the fandom, and have written many a rant about it (mainly the tendancy to rip out every goddamn part of the show and turn it into a meme. That's what you get when all the /b/ and /co/ rejects make their own chan. Especially when it clearly correlates them being ex- 4chan newfags, making everything into a meme.

I've thought about it and maybe I am a bit bitter and cynical. But you know, it's hard seeing a community about your favourite show, a community you care about, getting shit right in front of your face. And with pretty much nothing you can do.
At least /co/ is still normal. As long as those bros are around, I actually have somewhere to discuss the show. Usually. Heh.

-shrugs- Okay, I'm wrong about the origin of /co/lt.

And I don't really see the fan community as falling apart - maybe it's because I'm only involved in a small part of it, I dunno.

Anyhow, Zero, you are coming across as a bit elitist here: "newfags" "/b/ and /co/ rejects" etc. I'm not defending Ponychan, really, I'm not there all that often...

As for /co/, I've not been there, so I do admit that I based my impression of it off of most likely incorrect information.

Geez I'm not really part of any ponycommunity and I just thought that someone who watches MLP is automatically brony. I dont know anything about 4chan or ponychan, I've just watched few episodes.

Call yourself a brony if you want. Some people are just afraid of being associated with the people who live in their parent's basements at 40. Same reason some people don't want to be called gamers, trekkies, what have you.

They're all silly titles and if you want to wear it as a badge of honor, don't let anyone stop you.

I don't know where you get me as elitistic.
The word "newfag" would be an adequate description of their behaviour, and the 4chan rejects? They actually were rejects, mostly banned when the mods grew tired.
(Just saying these aren't really subjective terms.)

And I actually won't make a response to the rest since I'm quitting little discussion.
We all have our own arguements and is pretty much pointless since everyone will stand by what he thinks. (no this is not a ragequit)

And I don't really wanna ruin the other discussions here. Besides, the last thing I want here is to escalate this to a flame war.
So, I dunno, anyone has anything else to discuss?

People are making ponies far too complicated.

Instead, have a video series about ponies being forced to have slumber parties by Equestrian Big Brother, getting drunk and inadvertently conspiring to poison Ponyville, and doing illegal things with spacetime to exile creatures from existence. Huzzah!
