Levitation can be awesome, if you're clever.  One of my dad's favorite 70's era D&D stories involves the following exchange between a couple of his friends.

Player:  "So levitation... it's relative to an object, right?  You just create distance between yourself and some other object.  People only choose the earth's surface by default.  So fuck that, I'm going to levitate off the moon, matching its speed of orbit around the earth!"

DM:  "OK.  How far off the earth's surface are you going to levitate?"

Player:  "High enough that I won't get smacked by any trees or the like."

DM:  "Alright.  You cast your spell and begin levitating off the moon.  It works exactly as you expected.  You're traveling at a blistering pace.  The world is a blur beneath you.  You see a large silhouette on the horizon.  You realize it's a tall mountain range, a split second before you're smashed against the side of it.  Roll up a new character."

I saw this thing in the Skyrim thread. "Wow, this is some pretty good animation", I thought. "What are all these ponies about?" Then I watched in awe as an evil sorceress imprisoned on the moon for a thousand years escaped to wreathe the world in eternal darkness, only to be defeated by the Power of Friendship. I cannot escape the fact that I actually liked watching it. I'm really not sure what to think about that.

The DM fails maths forever. The Moon takes a month to make an orbit around the Earth, but I assume the idea was that the Moon appears to go across the sky once per day due to the rotation of the Earth; the player would effectively maintain a position directly between the Earth and the Moon while letting the Earth rotate beneath himself. In that case, simply dividing the Earth's circumference of 40075 km by the 24 hour period necessary to make a complete rotation gives us a speed of 1670 kph. At flight altitude of 200 meters, the horizon is 50 km away. That would give the player a full 1 minute and 48 seconds between seeing the mountain range and smashing into it.
