What about fanfics like Fallout Equestria that barely even use the original characters, and have the focus as somepony completely different?
I can barely stand fanfics with the same characters either most of the time (except for the Homestuck fanfic Be the Low-Blooded Sea-Dweller, but that is mind blowingly awesome and is predicated directly on the characters being different versions of the normal ones, and thus they feel like plausible alternatives without needing to feel 'real')

I'm not sure we've been playing the same game. All I saw was a boring flash, made of 95% walking, 5% dialogue and 100% boring.
It was actually discussed on /co/ yesterday. Absolutely no-one liked it.
