In my experience traps don't work. You have to rely on the Danger Room: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Danger_room

Get a squad of 10 up to legendary in [weapon skill]/dodge/shield. Armor helps but is ultimately unnecessary, since your legendary shield/dodge dwarves won't get hit. I assume you have copious amounts of adamantine? Make edge weapons and shields with them.

Once prepared, station squad next to the pillar, dig a single tile opening out. Watch the win. Even if they get stunned (happens frequently) they'll still block any attack that comes.

Cave-in = lose precious adamantine. Obsidianization works, but that's difficult to pull off.

How do you lose adamantine from a cave-in?

Also, don't use adamantine for shields. It's a waste. Material only affects the damage they do when your soldiers bash things with them, and adamantine is too light to do any damage that way. Use steel.

And upright weapons are again the exception to the [TRAPAVOID] rule.

If you beat all demons, won't the glowing pits simply spawn new ones?

Hrm, if material only affects bashing damage with shields, wouldn't you want silver shields?  Never tried to make a silver shield.  Can it even be done?

(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

I think Bronze is the heaviest shield material.

if you have a save before you started mining out the blue stuff, and or breaching HFS. i would make a copy and play that, since now you know the location of the breach try to build around that. Otherwise have fun.

They wander in from off the map, but if you can survive the first onslaught then you can pretty easily take down the 1 or two per hundred frames that come from the sides.

Urist Imiknorris:

If the cave in lands on an adamantine tile, then it's possible that it'll destroy that tile.

Good to know.

But will the upright weapons damage the demons to the extent that a trained squadron will?

Yup. If you have a long enough hallway full of them (say 200 tiles), the demons won't be able to get through them all without dying horribly.

And it's easy to engineer a cave-in away from the adamantine, in a place you force the demons to pass through.

Is there honestly anyone who doesn't know about this by now?

Yeah, the people who I tell to come here for help because they're new to the game  ::)

Seriously, how hard is it to just put an alternative name and spoiler tag in the title?

If you play spoiler fortress, in spoiler mode, you play the game managing a spoiler group of spoilers. You have to manage various factors of your spoiler such as providing them with spoiler and spoilers. Spoilers can be secured by various means such as spoiler, spoiler and spoilers. Morever, you can do more militatistic activities such as spoiler, spoiler and spoiler against a multitudes amount of foes. Spoilers come early, then spoiler and later on, spoilers. The last are magnificent beings like spoiler, spoiler or spoiler which'd all likely wipe out your spoiler when you think you already know about the game.

To be honest I doubt anyone's fun will be spoiled with spoilers. It's the LACK of awareness which kill new people's appetite. This is not "I want to be the cheap guy".

You know, because explaining how to make a farm is the same thing as combating hordes of demons from the deep, right?

It's the same. Both can be figured out by anyone eventually. Consequence of lack of knowledge on both is also dire. Anything which work only once doesnt worth hiding at all. Why? They do not make the game harder in any ways, shapes or form, just a cheap way to force the player to restart and do everything again, artificially increasing play time. It's the equivalent of randomly marking a tile which when dug it out, your save corrupt and your computer immediately crash. And the player is never informed of such tile and have to figure it out which. Fun huh?

EDIT: this is a nice example of how a sane person would view spoiler-fest games.

Demons are really not worth a spoiler tag when it comes down to it. In addition to what rephikul said, whether a player knows the demons are there or not has absolutely no effect on gameplay until the player decides to dig deep enough to encounter them. Further, the demons are typically deep enough that no player is likely to go down there unless he knows what he's in for.

Also, "an alternative name" is worse than useless when it comes to concealing spoilers, regardless of what the spoiler is. Especially if the context of the spoiler leaves nothing to the imagination. We're talking "special layer of hell" levels of hypocrisy.

Look, all I'm asking is for you to use an alternative name in the title and put in a spoiler tag, because you can spoil this stuff for some people when you don't. It's not like it's hard to do that or doing so detracts from the value of the thread, so there's no reason not to do so unless you're pointlessly stubborn.
