Well, I just mined into a hollow vein of admantine, It's full of demons and it's RIGHT NEXT TO MY FORGES. What should I do to *try* to get rid of them? What will actually work?

A military is out of the question, because I have a popcap of 20 dwarves and I won't change that.
This fortress has yet to see a human or elven caravan.

Also, I actually want this fort to do something fun (maybe FUN later, if I get bored, then I'll unleash demons), so I'm not releasing them YET.

So, what do?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have them safely walled in.

You are going to have horrible lag for the rest of the fort's life. If you take any steps to change that (by letting the demons in) your fort will die. Unless everyone in your fort is a legendary axedwarf, they will all become legendary ex-dwarves.

Is there honestly anyone who doesn't know about this by now?

More on topic, there's not much you can do unless all 20 of those dorfs happen to be badasses. Either keep them back there and deal with the rape on your framerate, or tear that wall down and face what's coming to you.

You will get those beautifull experiences!
1.FPS drop
2.Fort's death ( if there released)
3.Stamp your smile away because you found adamantine and you mined it

WATER (I think it might work , but no)
TRAPS (useless)
BADDASS 20 DWARVES (no use they just keep coming)

You could always rig a cave-in trap (or time a cave-in just right) to squish the visitors from the Underworld.  That'll save some of your FPS.  It's hard for them to path when they're dead.  Aside from that?  Savescum??

Rig up a drawbridge to keep them out, build a long corridor with multiple cave in traps and put spike traps on a repeater. At the end of the corridor have another drawbridge to cut of the corridor once they're too close.

I think demons are too big to let bridges close on them, otherwise I'd suggest that.

I get no lag from them except a 5FPS drop from my 90FPS average.

I still have a good 85FPS

Okay, here's what you do.

Make a long corridor to where the demons are waiting. Don't fully connect mine through yet!

Fill this corridor with upright menacing steel spikes. As high a quality as you can. Upright Spikes, not Weapon Traps!

Link these all to one lever, somewhere where there are always dwarves. Say, the main hall. Now using burrows, assign a miner to the far side of the spikes. Put doors on the fortress side of the corridor and lock them, meaning that miner is the only one who can get to the demon wall.

Get the lever pulled and on repeat. Now with the spikes going in and out get that miner to tunnel through. He'll die, but the constantly moving spikes will shred demons left right and centre.

Check what they're made of. If it's stuff like Gas, Vomit, Or fire, send a dog/kitten down there, and watch the carnage. Otherwise, see the other suggestions.

Neither water nor magma will work on its own, but I believe they can be obsidianized.  I don't think it kills them, but it won't allow them to path, so no framerate lag.  Alternatively, just give your dwarves [speed:1] and pretend that the game is moving at a normal pace.
