I keep hearing that magma is 100+ z-levels down... Does that mean there's no magma in this map? Also, same for caverns. Can't seem to dig below 20.
(playing dwarf fortress 40d)

I know, volcanoes, but is there any other way to get magma apart from a volcano in the map?

And, caverns, do they exist in 40d?

in 40d you can get tower caps growing if you breach an underground water feature like an underground river or lake.

What do you do? I only get a .exe file.

You can get magma in 40d, you just have to get an embark with a magma pipe/pool. Use the site finder.

Nope, its actually relatively rare to get magma by accident in 40d. It's ENTIRELY certain in 0.31.xx so far.

When you're selecting a site to embark in 40d, you have the option to search for an area with specific features (i.e. Underground Rivers, Chasms, Magma Pipes, Flux, and more). Use that to find an embark with the stuff you want.

There should be a file called "df" in the folder "df_osx".  That's a unix executable.  Run that, not the .exe.  You can run it from a terminal if double-clicking doesn't work by navigating to that directory and typing "./df".
