I think they are only useful when you manage to get an economy up and running.
Never got to that myself.. stupid tantrum spirals.. always been the death of my forts!

Economy is disabled (in .18). I'm gonna try a stack of 500 platinum coins as throwing weapon for my next adventurer however :D

The coins will have different pictures on them each year, so I mint one stack of coins each year and hope some of them will depict what has happend in the current fort. I usually designate a stockpile without bins for the coins and use the look tool to inspect them. I agree that they have no practical value.

(I got this idea for memorial coins from this forum and have used it ever since. I even give the coining of the first stack in year '1' quite high priority.)

I always create coin stockpiles around the tombs of my nobles and legendary warriors. :)

It's like engraving, without the room value increase or the need of a good engraver/wall

I minted coins and traded them away. Then I realized that the same material was really valuable when made into a goblet or something and encrusted with gems.

A stack of coins is worth the same amount as a base-quality craft. Since coins do not have quality levels, it's counterproductive to use them as trade goods.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I think it requires a certain Immigrant Noble to arrive (Immigrant Nobles are broken) and it is in general broken, bugged and useless.

Use burrows to keep your dwarves from making too many friends.
That's a good way to prevent fortress wide tantrums.

Yes, tantrum spirals are a serious bug getting more serious with every version.
Although it is very Dwarfy to become homicidal depressed when the booze runs out, it is most un-Dwarfy to throw yourself off a cliff when a goblin kills your pet cat.
Throwing yourself off a cliff in onto the goblin in revenge, killing him, that's Dwarfy.

Having INI settings to put limits on tantrums would be nice, and take very little code, but I'm not holding my breath.

Economy is disabled (in .18).

Why????

Toady disabled it. You can use .17 and mod tax collectors to be assigned from <manager?expedition leader? mayor? whatever you want, but use some of the starting ones or a mayor> and you can get a buggy but running economy and the 4 new buildings(shops).

The thing with economy is, all your dwarves will start needing to buy/sell items instead of having them allotted or used-by-need, and also to pay rent on housing. It's needlessly complex for the player, and more often than not results in dwarves becoming deprived of things that they would normally have access to.
