I'm still in the embark screen, what should i name my 1 lucky guy?  I'm going to make this play through one of those last remaining dwarfs on the planet, and they will have to repopulate all by themselves;  if anything looking like dwarfs come they are infected and must be destroyed in a new way everytime

So names please

btw my fortress name will involve balls... but how to word it?

btw I embarked in an awsome 3x3; it's somewhat a mini island covering 60% of the center.  I cut down some wood and made a bridge across, it also has 1 or 2 waterfalls.  but they are only 1 z level deep so really minor waterfalls :/.  Anyhow I need to pimp these hoes and make them dig hefner a home.

Not just monogamous, they're practically pandas.  I set up last-dwarves worlds all the time, and in order for breeding to work they can't be siblings (at least, I'm testing !!Genetics!! while I'm at it).  This means I need a minimum of two breeding pairs, I aim for three just to be safe.

Very frequently, however, I will embark with four women, three men (my current for they're all 'very friendly' men, to boot) and wind up with... one breeding pair.  All of their relationships, four years in and being left to sit and chat for months at a time, are 'friendship.'

This must be the frustration that led zookeepers to show porn to pandas...

I hope that this is changed in the future - perhaps personality traits for "horniness" (or some other applicable description of that trait), "fertileness," and even "faithfulness" to friends and lovers could be introduced that would allow for "cheaters," love-children, polyamory, break-ups, and other such intricacies. Dwarven familes will never be the same. 


On a barely related note, I think that if you have two animals of opposite genders, you should be able to assign your ranger to "manually fertilize" the female, inducing pregnancy. It happens irl all the time, and I imagine that similar measures have been going on for some time now, which means it could fit into the "era" which DF is in. Plus, the image of a dwarf jacking off various animals is one that must become a reality, especially if other dwarves start making engravings of it.

Unfortunately, all animals in DF reproduce by spores. Dwarf females only accept the spores of their mate. So your "Urist McHefner" can shoot his spores all over the other 5 females, but it won't get him anywhere. Not that a dwarf male WOULD shoot his spores on a female that isn't his mate, as that would just be impolite.

I am not sure if I want to see dwarves "cheating" on each other and getting jealous of each other. That seems to me to be the fastest way possible for a dwarf fortress to fail due to cheating, jealous beserk rages, and mourning tantrum spirals. Sure, it would be fun every once in a while, but not every fort that makes it past a few years to where the fort is safe, stable, and the drunken parties are just getting started. Imagine, dwarf males and female get plastered, have drunken orgies, and wake up with their beards tangled with the wrong dwarf. That happens too often, and someone is going to get an axe through a delicate place or a hammer upside their head in a jealous rage. That's all it would take for the tantrum spiral to begin...

I think this is ok provided it is sufficiently rare (or at least discovering unfaithfulness is rare) and extreme measures (like axe in face) are even more rare (I would restrict these for naturally violent dwarves that already are unhappy for other reasons). And it would make repopulating world easier in "last dwarves in the world" scenario.

I agree - if it's a rare occurrence that only occurs when the right combinations of traits/situations/dwarves is met, it would add a welcome but not too obnoxious layer to the game. Like you said - it should only get violent if a dwarf is predisposed to violence and is already pissed about other stuff; perhaps in other situations, the spouse wouldn't be bothered, which means that some lucky dwarves might end up as polygamists/polyandrists. Or at least the "extra" spouses might get a bad thought if their husband is spending too much time with his other wife or something. I wouldn't want it to suddenly become something that every player has to worry about and account for in fort building - I just think it might be cool to, once in a while, see bastard children being born, dwarves with more than one lover, and yes, even the occasional break-up.

Also: 1 to 6 ratio? Name the dwarf "Keitaro." It's not like Keitaro ever got with anyone but Naru anyway, so the name is totally fitting. Your girl dwarves should be Naru, Motoko, Kitsune, Su, Shinobu and Mutsumi.
