Saw a thread about on conceptart.org in 2006.  It was described as 'an atom bomb to your face in terms of complexity.'  Obviously, it was necessary to try it.

MeFi -> Boatmurdered

I found it a few years ago and uttered around with Adventure mode. Put it away after a month or so. Got hooked for good when I rediscovered it when .26 came out.

Having found Minecraft, I figured I'd browse their forums and found numerous links to DF through there. At first I thought "eh, what's that, looks a wee bit complicated" but then I read some on these forums and almost laughed my head off. Complicated? Yes, but !!FUN!!

Urist McDoctor recommends a healthy magma bath to minimize the risk for infection.

In one fort I had war elephants riding camels into battle. I can imagine the war elephants taming them simply by picking them up and dropping them in a coral. I still don't understand how you can fit a few ton elephant onto camel though.

My memory is hazy about the Time Before Dwarf Fortress, but I think how I got into this was via a comic posted on 4chan, then Google, then deciding to try it out because it was free.

You seem to be under the illusion that we give a shit about what happens to dwarves who are too dumb to live.

Don't remember too well, but it was referenced by someone in the lines of "It's about a dwarf whose family died stampeded by bloodthirsty elephants and he dosen't give a damn because he saw a really nice floodgate."

I thought it's some kinda unholy morph of Unreal World and Nethack. I was terribly wrong.

Yet another from TV Tropes, kept catching bits on it here and there in their various articles and eventually wondered "just what is this?" So I read their main page on it, then read about boatmurdered, then decided to try it out, downloaded it, said "What the NFBSK?!?" deleted it, waited a while, read more about it on TV Tropes, decided to try again, found the newbie guide for it (back for 40d), played it with that, got the hang of it, and the rest is history.

It was like a descent into madness. First was the image regard "You want a dwarf? [Pic] There's your dwarf." etc about digging and graphics. Then came references on Three Panel Soul. The pictures relating to the Boatmurdered saga appeared, followed shortly by the actual tale itself. By this point, I had to play this game. Scenes of towers, magmafalls, gobbo-ice cubes, etc were plaguing my thoughts.

You mean the ability to have endless training dummies, a carpet of eyestalks and tendrills, and a plant that both makes for some good grizzled sea man hard liquor AND the ability to turn your dwarves into the Night´s Watch...not reward enough?

I believe it was from visiting an imageboard (not my kind of preference in BBS) that I learned about this game.

I play dwarf fortress only a handful times a year.

Did you know that if you write 3.14 on a piece of paper and hold it in a mirror, it will say pie? And if you divide 42 by 3.14... you get 13.37!

It is incredibly satisfying to kill a man with a butterfly.

I found it in a thread on /v/.

Granted /v/ is the last place one would expect to find good games, but this one surprised me.
