Recettear - Item Shop Owner
« on: January 06, 2011, 08:56:32 pm »

I picked up Recettear when it was on sale for $10 at Steam.  Tonight, I finally got around to playing it.  Wow.  That is a great game.  I don't know how it progresses or how it ends, but I thoroughly enjoy it.  You do little dungeon crawls to get items to sell in your shop.  But you actually handle the negotiations of buying and selling.

Anyone else play it?

The only thing that saddens me about Recettear is that I suck at playing everyone but the sword and board guy.

Also, the lack of visual upgrades on characters when you upgrade their equipment (which is a really massive hassle to get them to perma-upgrade) upsets me immensely, even if it is to be expected with a JRPG.

The demo was pretty good, but I probably won't get around to buying the full version any time soon. Too pretty :-\

I enjoyed it.  Got a little grindy during the after winning the game bits.

It seemed neat, but not enough for me to buy it.

Also, I can't seem to find the pun in the name.

I love this game, humor in every line, the dungeon crawling is good, and of course the item shop part is fun too.

It really isn't so great in English, as the game name shares its kanji with the actual term in Japanese, but you don't pronounce the two the same in English.

However, you saying that you can't find the pun despite nobody mentioning the pun in this thread before you (though they did early on in the thread linked to, but they also explained it early on as well) leads me to believe you were being facetious.

OH CARP!

It's a great game that is wonderfully translated into English. The English puns further in the game are very funny.

Its battle mechanics are well balanced. You can find any number of guys swear that this guy or that girl is overpowered. That is because each has his/her own strength and once you play that way you are quite at ease. But god help you if you try to bull your way through unapproriately.

One thing I recommend is that you think carefully before selling good stuffs to your heroes (heroines). See, each has 6 slots of items that they can equip but if they are mostly empty you can start the dungeon with 3-4 items from your own stores and equip into those empty slot: bang your inventory is emty and you can fill them with loots. And once you return to town (s)he return those borrrowed stuff and that mean you got extra. IF you sell good stuffs to them and they equipped that already, any better thing you carry is just take up space from loots.

Ah man, Recettear is great, Carpe Fulgur did a great job translating it into english.  There really aren't enough localizations of JRPGS.

Can't wait to see Chantelise when they finish with it!

That's why you sell them the better stuff.
