Socks.  Lots and lots of socks.  It's the greatest Dwarven vice of all, outstripping alcohol by several orders of magnitude: the desire to own and haul as many feet-warming tubes of cloth as possible.

I learned most things from the wiki. Occasionally something from a tutorial or by trial and error.

Trial and error until I discovered the wiki, but it was more fun to make colossal mistakes, so I went back to trial and error.

I started on my own at first.  But it was frustrating; I barely knew what I was doing and spent about an hour frustrated and close to dropping DF forever. Once I looked up a few tutorials, a few more trial and error sessions later, I managed to get the basics down.
After that, I just utilized the wiki (so helpful!) to clear up anything that was especially confusing.

That initial step where I was just getting in for the first time was awful, though; I was getting so annoyed that I didn't even know the basic controls and the help files were no help at all.  Thank goodness people had put some good tutorials around.

I read a bit of a tutorial on wiki (mostly controls), then picked up the rest pretty quickly by myself. I guess I kinda had it easy since I started with 40d, which had the (slightly) improved gameplay/UI without the complex military.

Put another one down for the CaptDuck tutorials on YouTube.
I also started out using a tileset but I don't need those any more.
