Sorry for the mispelling on the poll my computer spell checker crapped out.

I learned by trial and error. I never even read the wiki until I learned enough to feed and water my dwarves.

Mostly trial and error, though my learning was vastly sped up when I found the Wiki. Especially when I was just starting and couldn't figure out that "Dig" could not make holes in the ground under my dwarves feet...

Mostly trial and error, myself, though I found that my learning rate improved once I started lurking on the forums.

1. read about this game on a German forum.
2. downloaded, genned a world, failed to work out digging.
3. read up on that in this forum.
4. started new fort, dug down. Starved to death.
5. read the starters guide on the wiki.

Havn't had a problem getting a fort running since. Still having trouble keeping me entertained in the later stages, though.


edit: damnit, i appear to have deleted my original DF version :/
edit2: nope, just zipped them up. Started with 27.176.38a :E pretty late.

The 40d tutorial was the main thing that helped me, even in DF2010. After I had the basics down it was just trial and error for the most part.

They wernt kidding about the difficulty curve of this game, though I did speed up once i found the wiki.

The forums were a big help too, because I a) saw other people making their own mistakes, which kept me from having to make them, and b) got a lot of help understanding the mechanics of the game.

Pretty much similar to a lot of folks here--trial and error with major assistance from the wiki.

And then I jumped into modding, which I also learned how to do mostly by the wiki and a bit from asking "what did I do wrong now" on the modding forums, to the extent that I have never actually learned some things like how to do pump stacks or how to manage a military because I always get distracted...
