Your favourite nostalgic Dwarf Fortress moments
« on: January 06, 2011, 07:20:57 pm »

I was going through my old Dwarf Fortress screenshots, and found this.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I made this when I had encountered my very first dragon in 40d, and was absolutely terrified of their dragonbreath after hearing stories of how dwarves react to fire. I was completely ecstatic when nobody suffered a single wound from that attack, thinking that I just had an extremely lucky break.

So! I want stories of your early Dwarf Fortress experiences! Moments that really endeared you to the game, made you had lots of fun/Fun, made you laugh, made you cry, made you tear your beard out in frustration!

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard

Overall I'd have to say the time I killed an Elf King with a handful of white sand was pretty high on the triumphant list, though that was in Adventurer mode.  Really my favorite moment was when I first discovered how effective a twisty trap corridor can be with my old 40d fort Gearholes.  Goblin salsa everywhere...

The first version i ever played was the first 3D version (33a, i think). I can remember when i finally found out how to move up and down z-levels (took me forever to realize what it meant by < and > in the keybindings).

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

Unleashing my first demon from the pits way back in good ol' linear 23. I was confused at first by the billowing clouds near my forges, then horrified by burning Dwarves running pell-mell back into the fort. The Goblins arrived to lay siege just as the first half-pint fireball careened out of the fort and set the world ablaze. It was awesome, total apocalypse. I got a proper case of the giggles from that, my first true run in with Fun.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While the corridor of doom dealt with most dangers, I had to send my military to mop up the rest of the junk. I remember that goblin alive and unharmed one frame, and dead the second.

Goblin archer using my half-finished pyramid as a shooting gallery. He was overlooking my massive stone stockpile, and all my dwarves had hauling enabled. It was messy, fun, and I learned a lot from that fort.

At least he couldn't have killed more than 40 without having to melee.

My favorite nostalgic moment was the first time piercing the pit of HFS. I hadn't the benefit of the wiki back then, just a few videos from Captain Duck. Seeing those dwarf corpses really put me on edge. Immense fun ensued.

My overall favorite moment came just recently. I'd embarked on a tropical site with extreme cliffs. A titan intruded on the site and the booby entrance was on the top of the highest peak. Hoping to get an epic battle, I stationed my best squad at the top of this peak. Only a single macedwarfess made it when the titan reached the top. She had two babies strapped to her. I pictured one strapped to the front and another to her back.

The three then proceeded to pummel the titan into a bloody pulp. She bashed with her mace and her babies flailed with their fists.

The titan failed to land a single blow.

She struck down the titan just as the rest of the squad was emerging from the entrance. Apparently they had to stop and "tie their shoes," or something like that.

Engravings ensued.
