It's nearly always the AI that kills a total war game, be it the combat AI, strategic AI, diplomatic AI. or just path-finding AI of the soldiers... It's usually pretty poor.

I'm happy because it looks like the battle AI will actually try to attack this time, unless the trailers are staged lies.

Well, they're saying they won't release until the AI is finished. I doubt that, though.

Can I take a game back to the shop after having it for a week? :P

Return PC Games?  Very unlikely... not at full price anyways...

No, you can't take it back because Shogun 2 requires a Steam activation. Steam doesn't allow trading used games. Not even gifting the damn thing.

As for the AI, they (meaning Creative Assembly and their new PR guy Kieran) promised that Empire Total War would have revolutionary AI. It did ... It had the worst AI in the entire series. CA now admits that in new interviews. It took 6 patches till the game had a half-way decent AI and even then. No, I was bitterly dissappointed and for the first time ever, I'm not getting a Total War game on release date. I'll go see what a few community folks think of it after a few weeks and then MIGHT purchase the game. If the AI is terrible, they are not getting my money.

Hype all you want, that's part of the game. But don't tell flagrant bullshit, CA.

Like all Total War games, Shogun will be saved by the modders..but this one may be fun to play until the mods start rolling in, the last time that happened was with Rome Total War imo, even though the vanilla AI was still busted

Unless of course CA (Or Sega) are still to afraid of modders to make it a modable game. ETW and NTW have a fraction of the modibility of RTW & M2TW.  Unless CA can actually allow their games to be modded M2:TW & RTW will always be better games no matter what they throw out.

Not saying ETW(With Darthmod) is a bad game, Its actually awesome, I still play it on a semi-regular basis, but in the the end M2:TW & RTW with mods are better.

Shogun 2 will as moddable as Empire and Napoleon. They do promise to "help" modders, but they have been promising mod tools for Empire and Napoleon too. Empire would be the "most moddable game to date". Heh, that didn't pan out as intended.

Well Empire is at least getting better with new tools coming out to allow more to be modded. IIRC they managed to add more buildings to towns without sacrificing buildings in others and I -Think- they might be close to figuring out how to add new minor towns to regions. (Like those ones you can build churches or universities at)

yeah I agree about the lack of modding tools, it is a shame really considering how wonderful total conversions can be. And yeah, Darth mod made Empire playable, but there is soo much more that could be done.

Surely lots of people buy these games just to play mods, but I guess it is not really that many people compared to how many units total wars sell overall.

you have hero units which are amazingly powerful

Oh shit that sounds horrible.

Giant Enemy Crab : Total War anyone?
The stages of the game will also be based on famous battles which took--actually took place in ancient Japan. So here's this giant enemy soldier and you attack his weak-point for massive damage.

Anyway, I remember there being a (decently recent) thread on this already. Oh well.

Deus ex Machina is starting far too many topics (7 in two days, or something) and it's starting to irritate people.  I don't think the conversations were illegitimate, but there's a point at which it becomes excessive and causes problems.  It's not fair to other people, so I'm going to have to lock the latest threads.
