Will clothing ever be a priority?
« on: December 15, 2007, 08:08:00 pm »

This is all the result of rotting clothing.  All of my dwarves are now tantruming, killing each other, or dying of melancholy or insanity.  All of their thoughts are ecstatic EXCEPT for their clothes rotting off.  Apparently that is enough to negate being happy at work, having a nice room, eating in a legendary dining room with legendary food and drink, and admiring lovely items.

I know that this problem has existed since the creation of the game.  Are there any plans to fix it?  The downfall of my fortress is due not to sieges, starvation, or even killer fish, but old clothing.

I offer a sacrifice to the all powerful Toady in the hopes that he might hear my prayer!  Anyone else want to join me?

This made me immediately construct something to make new clothes.

New clothes don't negate rotting clothes though, and they still don't take the old ones off when they get new ones.  The penalty for rotting clothes is higher than the bonus for new ones, AND once they get new clothes they will need to rot off again, so it's not worth the effort.

Hence why most people have nudist colonies.  Dwarves will eventually get over the one rot and then proceed merrily, happy and free.

Unless a few of them go melancholy or berserk like mine did, and they die or kill each other, causing further unhappy thoughts until the situation spirals out of control.  Like is happening in my fortress now, making the completion of the pyramid I've spent weeks on impossible....

I know Toady has a lot of things to work on and I can't even tell you how much I appreciate all the work he's put into this so far, but the downfall of almost all of my fortresses seems to be clothing related, and I'm ready to pull my hair out.  :(

[NOTHOUGHT] and [NOEMOTION] are swell when you're trying to circumvent this, but it's cheating so only use it if you're doing a project, like you were.

My fix was to simply mod clothes out of the game. Everyone, human, dwarf, elf, goblin now has 30 natural armor which represents the abstracted clothing they're wearing.

The only thing that the clothing shop is ropes and bags, sewing images. Leatherworker's shop produces armor but no clothes. Goblins don't bring thousands of rags for me to dump, dwarves are much happier with their abstracted "clothes", and the game runs much (about 5 FPS) with the mod than without. I HIGHLY recommend removing clothes from the entity and object files in the raws. You'll never look back. As a bonus, no more artifact socks.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.  Veryinky, can you give me detailed instructions on how to do that?  It sounds like a good fix.  And I'll probably use your suggestion, Torak, for now, so I don't lose my project.  I didn't know that was possible.

To mod out clothes, remove the references found in the /raw/objects files.

Specifically, everything with [SOFT] in it's definition.
item_armor.txt COAT,SHIRT,CLOAK,TUNIC,TOGA,CAPE,VEST,DRESS,ROBE
item_gloves.txt GLOVES,MITTENS
item_shoes.txt SHOES,SANDAL,CHAUSSE,SOCKS
item_pants.txt PANTS,LOINCLOTH,THONG,SKIRT,SKIRT_SHORT,SKIRT_LONG,BRAIES
item_helm.txt CAP,HOOD,TURBAN,VEIL_HEAD,VEIL_FACE,SCARF_HEAD (I leave in the mask since an artifact mask is reasonably cool)

Remove all lines which refer to the clothes in:
entity_default.txt

In creature_standard.txt Optionally add:   [DAMBLOCK:30]
right before [FAT:#] to dwarves, elves, humans and goblins to abstract them wearing "clothes".

Alternatively, download
http://rapidshare.com/files/76966138/nocloth2.zip.html
and unzip inside the raw/objects directory to overwrite. Create a new world and voila, the cloth blight is gone.

Edit: gah, uploaded wrong creature_standard.txt file.

Hm. Y'know, the problem is probably that each individual item of clothing rotting generates a bad thought, right? And most -- if not all the clothes -- of an individual rot off at about the same time, given that they all have the same origin time.

So -- in addition to having a discard-worn-clothing AI trigger, perhaps randomizing initial cloth wear would be helpful?

Makes sense.  I mean, I can see dwarves picking out their best, or at least sturdiest clothing to take with them to their new home - but they can't really have a /perfect/ selection...everyone has that one sock with a hole in it.
