Equipment can only be assigned on the turn the mission is launched, not on the turn the mission is planned.

I'm sure that could be much easier to understand, but I'm too tired to try fixing it right now.

I wish ;) I think people have all but forgotten about BARIS! But maybe I could make a forum game sometime!
I'm currently working on a small scale astronaut game inspired by BARIS, might give me some ideas for such a game.  8)

Sounds interesting.  I think that the basic rules of BARIS would translate perfectly to a forum game too.  Two or more players submit their orders for each half year to the GM privately and the GM posts yearly status updates.  All that's really needed is to invent a new set of calculations to determine the results or research and budgets.

Quite apart from a forum game, I could host an ACTUAL game of BARIS (in a hotseat fashion) if the forum part was unavaliable. It could also be done in detail as a forum game, but it would take some research to get a decent set of failures (something which I am doing for this lil tezt game).

I think if I did a forum game it might be better to do Mission to Mars and work on it myself, with BARIS as a base for the model used. This I will do I think in some time! lets say, soviet union never fell, its 2010-2030 and the next space race is settlement on Mars.
This is not as hard as it sounds, the only real differences would be the difficulty and type of missions.

Mars would be more research missions, more supply missions, more science and unmanned drone missions. Probably at the beginning some small shuttle/craft missions and eventually a large mission? possibly from a ISS docked/manufactured vehicle. Oh and atmospherics such as seeding mars with large quantities of fungus or algae is a possibility. Most of these ideas are from films i've seen, so this is 'pre research' theory :D

I'd just like to ask a question.  I downloaded this game after seeing this thread, and it looks like a great little "business" sim.  But for some reason, after I've assigned a mission, the "Assemble Vehicle" system goes schizophrenic.  Sometimes my satellites and capsules can be selected, sometimes they can't.  When I assign the mission, sometimes preexisting payloads just won't be there to be assigned, but the next turn, they can be, with no action on my part to change anything.  What's that about?

Like the other guy said, one season you order a future mission, the next you assemble and launch. Also check the statistics such as payload and how much your rocket can lift (you wont be able to launch if you dont have sufficient equipment).
Also make sure youve researched the equipment necessary. For lunar missions research the lunar probe for example.
Maybe one more thing, make sure you have bought or autobought the equipment needed for the mission when in assembly. Hope this helps!

As a die-hard lunatic, I would suggest that a permanent settlement on the moon would be better realism.  If you pressed me to suggest a plan to get to mars, it would go something like "Well, the first thing you do is establish a lunar colony, then using materials and fuel from the moon, you get to mars."

Alternate idea: start the game in 2056 with lunar colonies already established and make the mission to explore the rest of the solar system with however many players you want (In the role of governments or mega corporations).  There would be a logical extension between prestige and cash too.  Your explorations earn you mining rights that would finance the next wave of explorations.

I agree it seems illogical to shoot off to Mars leaving the moon barren. I think your 2056 idea is best, colonising the moon wouldnt be nearly as much fun as Mars I think!

Another advantage to the post-lunar idea is that the failures would be less catastrophic but more varied.  Post-lunar ships would have proportionally smaller engines because they aren't launching from the surface of such a large gravity well so there is a smaller chance of a massive fireball.  There would however be the risk of more complex systems breaking down over a longer voyage meaning a wider range of partial failures is possible.  And even in the case of a major failure, rescue would be much more feasible.

Other interesting things would be that single shot rockets would gradually give way to truly reusable (not space shuttle 'reusable') spacecraft and there would be more variety possible in designs: i.e. you might start with Al-O rockets but be able to start manufacturing ion drives, space sails or even nuclear drives.

I'd suggest that the game's currency would be lunar population.  As your lunar population increases you can put more man hours into building more sophisticated craft and the facilities for more advanced techniques as well as doing the experimental research necessary to improve designs.  But all of the actual design and theory work would be done back on earth and would be considered free because of the relatively far smaller cost.

You could even have a feedback loop regarding research... to me it seems reasonable that a more advanced nuclear propulsion system would lead to further lunar colony development, feeding into a push for Mars...

I think that within this thread we could easily form a consensus that we have all been born a few generations early...

I dunno.  The notion of using a nuclear launch from the surface of earth itself seems rather reckless to me.  I suppose you could use a conventional rocket to get to get to LEO and nuke it the rest of the way though.  I was imagining the nuclear rocket as more being a low weight design to get back to the moon from somewhere else.

Yea I had a similar idea in mind... space elevator to orbit, hi-tech engine for orbital transfer, possibly exchange to lunar landing craft at Lagrange point...

I would think that with a space elevator, the cost to LEO would become so low that Earth -> Mars direct would become plausible.  If you can make a space elevator then there shouldn't be any problems with shipping lots of Hydrogen-Oxygen rocket fuel up and going where ever you want.  It would be less like the race to the moon and more like the race to the north pole, technically easy but done in a reckless scramble.

I personally would go with the idea of constructing a ship in orbit. I cant see the logic of a earth launch - it would just be too difficult and too large.

Sorry, not clear on my part.  I meant if you had a space elevator then you could easily go LEO to anywhere and skip the moon.

Some of you might look at this and see youve got worse skills than others. Dont worry this is just the basics, it goes up after basic training I believe, and if you need more, in advanced training.
Also, the early guys seem total crap, but remember A) they need only Capsule skill for the most part and B) probably every one of them will get to fly and C) they will be the pioneers, breaking most of the early prestige wins!
