The soviets complete a earth orbital manned mission, were behind again.

We have a working Mercury Capsule and Atlas rocket program, we have launched a satellite and now it's time to launch the first man into space.

Currently we have Scout, Conchita and Deadmeat in the Mercury program, the others are advanced training.

I'd say this brings to an end the Mercury program, theres nothing more to be gained, the Gemini program is approching ready usage and we will recruit new astronauts this season for it.

Primary focus right now is scouting the moon with a long range satellite and finishing R&D on Gemini while the next group of astronauts complete basic training.

Soviets launch their first two man craft successfully.
