I'll be doing Buzz Aldrins Race to space in a picture LP in the next post sometime this week!

Post here if you want to be added into the games roster as an astronaut, and watch your bay12friends burn up in the atmosphere or land on the moon.

I believe the Astronauts are in the order of realistic entry into the space program. (so 1-6 or so will be the Mercury astronauts)

With this understanding, whoever wants to be entered as an astronaut will be placed every 6th astronaugt in the historical roster. So we may have only 1 bay12 Gemini pilot. However we may have 3 bay12ers piloting an Apollo mission.

So anyone who wants to be added post here and ill add your name to the roster in a day or so to begin!.

Also, I will be giving points to bay12 astronaughts who achieve things.

For example - If Warhammer is the first manned space mission and he gets 15 prestige for the USA, I will give HIM that 15 Prestige.
If 3 bay12ers are in a 3 man mission (apollo module), then I will give each one the prestige gained whenever they gain some. Prestige is gained in exceptional missions such as beating the soviets into manned flight, manned lunar flyby etc.

Capsule: Skill in capsule parts of the mission (Most of it, burns etc)

Endurence: Lower endurence means astronaut might washout easily in training, further training or retire earlier. Also required for long duration missions

An overview of the technologies we will be using

Satellites

Explorer: Orbital satellite. Can be launched off any rocket
Ranger: Interplanetary satellite. Can be sent to the moon, mercury, venus, mars, saturn. Requires a Titan/Proton rocket or the equivilent system (booster stage for example).
Surveyor: Lunar probe. Requires Titan rocket.
Docking module: Used for docking missions. Safety factor is 40% and cannot be improved by R&D. It is increased in safety by successful docking missions. A failed mission doesnt increase or decrease its safety factor. Safety increases 5% per attempt in a mission. Maximum for DM safety is 98%. If it is 'powered on' (successful docking) It lasts until the next year (1 turn). Example. Launched the DM 1962, powered on. Mission was slated for 1963 for attempted docking, it may use that DM to practice on. As opposed to using a new one launched at the same time as the 63 rocket. Weighs the same as Explorer.

Rockets

Atlas: Can launch small objects into suborbital/low earth orbital missions. Including a 1man capsule. With boosters can launch 2man craft, but only into earth orbit.
Titan: Can perform lunar/interplanetary missions, but have a fairly low load capacity.
Saturn V: Can perform every mission and have a large load capacity. May need boosters for very large capsules (Apollo)
Nova: Can perform every mission, cannot use/does not need boosters.

Capsules

Mercury: One man capsule for short duration missions B/5 days. Can perform suborbital and suborbital EVA missions.
Gemini: Two man capsule for E duration/14 days. Can perform suborbital, earth orbital, orbital evas, orbital dockings, orbital durations and some lunar missions. Requires an A or B kicker.
Apollo: Three man capsule for F duration/18 days. Can perform suborbital, orbital and most lunar missions. Does not require a kicker for lunar missions. the CSM can propel a LEM into lunar orbit. Can use one or two man LEMS. Contains built in docking adaptor for LEM.
XMS-2 minishuttle: Threeman reusable minishuttle for D duration missions/12 days. Requires a kicker A or B. Can use one or two man LEMS.
Jupiter: Four man craft on F duration/20 days. Can perform suborbital, orbital, orbital EVA, orbital duration, lunar pass, lunar orbital and lunar landings. It lands directly on the moon, does not use a LEM or DM. Requires a NOVA rocket due to its huge size.
Eagle LEM: two man LEM. For lunar rendezvous and docking with the CSM after lunar landing. Can be used on Apollo and XMS-2.
Cricket LEM: One man LEM for lunar rendezvous missions. Can be used on Gemini, Apollo and XMS-2. More expensive than the twoman due to extra automated systems and backups needed.

EVA Suits: Space suit for extravehicular activity outside the craft. Is required for spacewalks and lunar excursions.
A-Kicker: booster package which can launch one craft from earth to lunar orbit.
B-Kicker: a more powerful version of the A-Kicker. Capable of spacecraft/LM/DM missions.
Strapon Boosters: Extra rocket boosters to add lift capacity during launch.

Key additional notes:

Each successful mission increases the safety factor of the equipment used.
Advanced training takes 2 years
Need 3+ LEM points before attempting a direct lunar ascent
Astronauts who dont like each other will get demoralised faster. They go from fine to burned out (then quit). Positive things such as being placed as primary or backup team for a program improves their moral.
Scrubbing a mission or failing will demoralise them.
Success will improve ALL of the programs moral a bit.
If an astronaut dies others will loose moral and may quit, especially if they were 'friendly'.
Each time a lunar probe scouts the moon it increases the safety of landing the LEM by finding safe landing sites.
Manned lunar orbital missions also improve LEM landing safety.
The LEM suffers safety penaltys if not tested in orbital earth LEM test and/or lunar LEM test missions.
Endurence in astronauts is required for long durations missions.
