Man up, ask in person.

*You get a sweet 'not a douchebag' tag, quite worthwhile.

... Oh my god, not over the intertubes if you can ask in person.

In my book, the internet is pretty much an automatic "no," whereas in-person is considered favorably.

Man up, even if you're a nervous wreck when you ask, it comes off leagues better than an extremely articulate E-mail. Yeah, anybody who says to do it on the internet is a troll or an idiot. It doesn't look good.

Makes me wonder..

Imagine you already asked her out.. Is it then a bad thing to use very articulate e-mails to cover up any missed clarifications on the moment you asked her out as a nervous wreck?

For example, in your nervosity you might forget to say where to meet.
I doubt you'd come off as a 'creepy nerd' when you send the girl an e-mail then, but I might be wrong.
Am I wrong?

"Where to meet" is fine.  "I forgot to say how much I really like you" is not fine.

Stuff with emotional content is not internet material, in essence.

I'll also note that if you spend any time with this girl, she will probably have to tell the story of how you met and how you asked her out, as prompted by some other female individual--if only her mother.  You do not want her to be saying "Oh, he sent me an email," especially if she's living with her mom, because most moms are a. not big on today's tech bandwagon and b. still hold a lot of clout over their daughters.

in person, always

tough but necessary

if you want you can drop an obvious hint over the internet and see if she then proceeds to avoid you.

Whatever happened to the good old handwritten loveletter? (Ok that may be bad advice if your handwriting resembles mine...)
