Aliens vs. Predator Games
« on: January 04, 2011, 06:27:18 pm »

So, shall we discuss the AvP games? :p Of which we've had about 90 and they're all varying degrees of "alright" to "FUCK YEAH MAN".

I just completed the newest game (Aliens vs Predator 2010), and it was pretty good. The combat mechanics are a bit dodgy (How many bullets does it take to kill a single drone? And why can I PANCH ALIEN IN FAEC and get away with it? Also, FUCKING INSTAKILLS IN MULTIPLAYER MAN) but it's damn fun and a pretty nice looking game. I also like the way the campaigns took place on the same map (hi, recycling of terrain) which didn't feel cheap but actually felt kinda cool. They also have the predator and alien playstyles down to a T, but that's to be expected since Aliens versus Predator 2 did them well, too. My favourite part of the game has to be that, even on normal difficulty, things CAN kill you if you're stupid. Things WILL kill you, in fact. Even with semi-regenerating health and shit tonnes of health packs, you will still die often, usually from a swarm of xenomorphs bumrushing you.

I still think Aliens versus Predator 2 did multiplayer best, though. The game is ugly as sin, but I'm still considering finding my CD and playing again. Jumping into an exosuit and crushing xeno heads or turning into a queen after being a tiny little facehugger was just ridiculously fun. The combat was fairly fluid, and even fun to WATCH - as a predalien jumps out of a vent, runs towards a marine, smashing his face in before getting shot apart by a bunch of marines coming around the corner.

Feel free to contribute, ladies and gents. :p Anyone played the newest AvP, or have any idea which one is your favourite?

I don't remember which one of the FPSes I fell in love with, but it might have been the first.  Nomming the heads off androids and watching white stuff spray everywhere = very satisfying.  (To identify which game it was, I remember as an alien climbing upside down and snapping a chain that caused a block to...uh...I don't know, block a vent or something?)

Also the arcade beat-em-up was a real hoot.  "IF IT FAILS, FORCE IT."

Cannot stand the Pred jumping mechanic in the latest one.  What is this, Twilight Princess?

avp1 gold all the way. The fastest, and scariest, also if you put console on, you could spawn aliens marines, and preds of all classes and watch them fight. Level design was good and darkness great.

Avp2 had better narrative than 1, but it was very very trigger based, something monilith tend to do abit.  I though the early pred missions were exceptionally good in avp2, as it really brought out the hunting side, rather than just fps with perks. Jumping between the trees, then droping down to bag heads.

Only played abit of three, didnt think much of it, tbh, havnt played multiplayer tho. Seemed to take some points from CODs book and run through the film sets. Was abit old school with arenas, and in my view, belittled the enemies abit by making them weak and numerous, also i dont like this modern regen etc.

avp golds multiplayer was just old school deathmatch, i quite liked avp2 multiplayer, generally played as a marine and hunted predators with motion tracking

I haven't been able to get any vomit this release. Not any I can pick up, at any rate.
Swans, too. Swans are complete bastards.

My biggest problem with AvP 2010 was performance. Even after a total system upgrade, it still chokes. And staggers. And lags. Not so bad I couldn't play all three campaigns to the end, but bad enough when I showed it to people, no one wanted to try it.

2010 is easily the most atmospheric of any of the games. I really enjoyed all three campaigns on that basis. I never get tired of the stealth kills, the detail they put into them is just awesome.

The combat was a mess though. I know some people are good at it, but between the lag and rock-paper-scissors-everyone-has-a-different-attack-animation-and-speed....combat just felt like a fucking mess. Which in MP meant no one would fight you head on...it was always from behind, at range....

The repetitive level design and pointless story.....eh, I can deal with those as long as I'm immersed. And AvP mostly kept me immersed, right up until my system would lag.

I have faith that Gearbox is going to do a good re-make, focusing on playability over appearance.

I don't think I played the first one very much. I'll have to.

I'll have to retry the campaign mode in 2. I never did, really. It was ALWAYS multiplayer, for me.

Only the xenomorphs are numerous, and they're not all THAT weak. You mainly come across them in ones and twos, and any more than that will usually give you a good boning.

Really? I didn't have this trouble at any point, I don't think.

I wish we could get a decent AvP RPG or colony sim. They'd be excellent.

The demo ran like ass on my older system, and the newer systems of my friend. The uh, full demo version of the game I tried performed better, marginally, with a much better system.

This is of course with everything maxed out. When you blow the system specs for a game out of the water, you shouldn't need to play at med settings to avoid the lag.

It might have been the crack you were using. Sometimes they really fuck stuff up, especially if the devs have programmed some booby traps.

I was fine on full settings with a decent (modern) PC.

I want to believe that, but the MP demo ran so bad for everyone, I'm not sure it was just the crack.

Eh, the full game played fine for me, no idea about how it ran for anyone else. I did get the game for free, though, with my graphics card. :p Probably heavily optimised.

Oh, and in some of the hives on the marine missions... FUCKING ALIENS IN THE WALLS. Just waltzing in, gun ready, only to see the wall next to you uncurl and slap you in the face was terrifying. Of course, from then on I used my flamethrower on anything that even remotely LOOKED like an alien (which was a lot of things because the developers are obviously bastards and decided to confuse people as much as possible :p), wasting so much ammo in the process it's a wonder I didn't die.

Androids, on the human campaign.

I almost raged out of my seat at that part. Next to no ammo, 4 of the guys on their feet and armed with either rifles or that railgun thingy. Had to retreat almost back to the last area entrance so I could pick them off one at a time. With more than two taking aim at me, I was dead before I got off my second shot.

Shotguns to their faec. It only takes two shots (right-click near them to double-shot them and knock them down, then a final left-click) or use your sniper rifle to shoot off their heads then right-click shot them with the shotgun.

Sniper rifle also lets you see them when they're invisible, which is nice.

I was severely dissapointed with AVP2010, it felt so rushed and current-gen like in all the bad ways mind you. not that im gonna bash people who actually lked the game, to each his own. i was just so very very dissapointed... but that extends to this whole current-gen for me at least, anybody wanna buy my PS3 :-P

IIRC, you have what you brought into that level. Unless you want to run straight into the middle of the androids.

I don't really know what mission you're on. :p But every time you start a new mission, you're given new weapons.

Just saw the first one in Steam.

IMHO, the best of the bunch, because it didn't try to make 1 alien = 1 marine = 1 pred.

Also, it had the survival mode, precursor to L4D or CoD Zombies, only with aliens.
