Suggestion: New Issues
« on: January 04, 2011, 04:19:28 pm »

Right, so LCS has a good deal of issues, but doesn't quite cover all of the political issues of the day. That's what this thread is for. I was struck recently with the realization that LCS has no Climate Change issue, so:

Climate Change
C+: Climate Change is mocked as a myth, even as inhabited lowland regions begin to flood permanantly. (Effect: Some of the downtown slums becomes flooded and abandoned)
C: Climate Change is generally not adressed by the government.
M: There are programs in place that have slowed down the rate of Climate Change.
L: Climate Change has been grinded to a halt by federal ecological efforts, but the damage remains.
L+ The United States has spearheaded international ecological efforts, reverting Climate Change to pre-industrial levels.

One thing about issues....I think they should try to remain relevant to what's going on in game, if possible. Part of what really makes LCS so amazing is, when you DO finally start changing laws, there are game play consequences. Drug laws vs. drug profits, flag laws vs. flag actions, ect....

So new ones should try to find that angle in some way. Just adding a climate issue for it's own sake is kind of bloat, no? Flavorful bloat, but still bloat.

Also I'd put it more as "Environmentalism" then "Climate change". But I can't remember don't we have something similar?

But is the environment really a staple of either Liberal or Conservatism? (Real question, I am not part of American Politics)

I think it would be easy enough to add effects. I've already suggested one for Arch-Conservative, but suggestions are welcome for the others.

We have pollution, but that and climate change are both aspects of enviormentalism.

In the US, environmentalism is pretty much a liberal thing only. Conservative canidates tend to either not talk about it or mock it, depending on how extreme they are in their stance.

C+ Talking about it is a crime.
L+ Using an aerosol can is a crime.
It's the sort of way out whack stuff that LCS loves (Flag murder etc...)

PERFEKT!

I also though this idea is sort of contained in the pollution issue, but it depends on how detailed you want to get.

The question of Climate Change has a lot of sub-topics embedded in it: corporate use of land and natural resources, bureaucratic oversight (or lack thereof), air quality, criminal prosecution (or lack thereof), one party control of government science reporting....

It's a shoe in for the kinds of topics that both make the liberal point and make fun of liberals. And envisioning what the country would be like with a crazy unified stance on Climate Change would make for some fun changes to gameplay.

Those are excellent effects, now that I think further about it. At C+ trying to sway the issue becomes criminal, but at L+ graffiti is more severe criminal-wise, harming one of the LCS's better issue swaying actions.

I was thinking more aerosols in general.
Although, making graffitti artists take a juice hit could be good?

Grafitti is the only tangible use of aerosol that I can think of in game atm. (Or were molotovs changed to some aerosol based thing?)

I sort of liked environment a bit because that way the game could remove trees from parks or add landfills inside the parks.

The Homeless shelter could become the Landfill Homeless Shelter

Thank you Magic School Bus

As for the Spreycan...

So it is pretty much illegal to use it no matter what huh? Turning the crime "Ozone Depletion" Into a easter egg.

I'd imagine if the spray cans were illegal, then you would no longer be able to buy it from the Pawn Shop, kinda like an inverted Assault Rifle ingame.

Balance that out with less places to hide due to the climate taking over one or more of the slum districts when laws are C+.

Good ideas.

Oh! And flag burning.
It could lose all use as burning flags are damaging to the environment. So burning a flag would be illegal in L+ climate change.

Grafitti is the only tangible use of aerosol that I can think of in game atm. (Or were molotovs changed to some aerosol based thing?)

Molotovs are made out of EVIL FOSSIL FUELS, but perhaps changing them to a more renevable solution such as ethanol could perhaps be liberal...

...or perhaps not. I'm also somewhat unfamiliar with US politics. As far as I know, there's some controversy about ethanol fuel as it is produced on fields that could also produce food for the poor. Question is: ethanol - liberal or conservative?

I agree that issues should have gameplay effects, as that's one of those things that add stunning depth to this game. Preferably each issue should have some effect, and perhaps we'll even get to see the time when most issues have effects on every level of the political spectrum. Some current issues could also be grouped together in my opinion, but I welcome other ideas as well.

LCS has nothing on public services, which is a big left vs right issue at least here in Finland. As far as I know, health care is one of the hottest issues in USA today, and yet, nothing about it in LCS. Conservatives would restrict health care, schools, libraries et cetera to only those who can pay, while liberals would provide all services to everyone for free, perhaps going as far to provide free university education. This could be a single issue, Public services, or be split into Health care, Education et cetera. Conservative health care results in the free clinic being closed and the university hospital being expensive, while eventually the liberal health care laws improve the free clinic to be as efficient. Education determines the cost of education, and spawned highschool dropouts, and such.

On the other hand, LCS has got a very detailed view on various commie ideals, to the point where two issues (corporate and union) used to unintentionally overlap each other in their descriptions. If unnecessary issues are to be removed, look there first, I say.

I think that, to go with the over-the-top nature of C+ and L+ in this game, releasing even minuscule amounts of unnecessary greenhouse gases would have to lead to a crime with an over-the-top name and criminal charges: planet murder.
