4X Games?
« on: January 04, 2011, 03:08:09 pm »

So, anyone fancy posting 4X games that they know of? :p I find myself lacking in this department.

Here's the ones I know of:-
Sword of the Stars
Civilization series
Distant Worlds
(Possibly) Europa Universalis and related games
Commander: Conquest of the Americas (Again, just possibly)

Now you guys?

Aurora.
Star Ruler.
Master of Orion(1 and 2. Also 3, but I hear it's bad.).
Stars!
Fragile Allegiance.
Ascendancy.
Reunion(maybe a 4x, though it's quite linear.).
Sins of a Solar Empire.

That's all I know about from the back of my head and you haven't listed. I've played all of them but Master of Orion 3.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Galactic civilisations 1 & 2, but beware, the second one's tech tree is like an excuse for a developer to get some huge list of awful puns off his mind.

Space Empires IV & 5 are probably my favorites

I like 4 since it has a better flow of technology; ease of learning; more ship sizes; in general its the better of the series, but 5 has the the eye candy :D

Alpha Centauri seriously is the best thing ever (I think the original is superior to the expansion, which IMO only adds unnecessary and confusing things and factions that are awful, buggy or poorly balanced).

GalCiv2 was indeed ruined for me by the devs' terrible sense of humor, and also because balance really isn't that great and the AI can be pants-on-head retarded sometimes.  After playing GalCiv2, you understand why other games' AI is so stingy with tech trading; GalCiv2 lets you play the peacemonger neutral party, trading tech off everyone to become a superpower, then quietly build up a giant army in a corner of the map while everyone completely ignores you and never ever bands up to defeat the growing menace.

MOO3 is essentially Spreadsheets: The Game.  Don't bother.  Same with Aurora.

Colonization has limited fun value due to balance issues and weirdness, but it's a kick if you just want something to tool around with for a while since it's a corner of the genre where basically nobody ever goes.

If you've never played Master of Magic, you are seriously missing out.  Grab DosBox and enjoy it today; it's a shining jewel.

No, it really isn't.

Personally I really enjoy Distant Worlds and Sword of the Stars right now.

MOO3 wasn't that bad. Most 4X are Spread Sheets the Game. They're just prettied up in the better 4x games.

If you want to tear into MOO3, then tear into where its actually weak. Thats with its imbalance ship to ship combat, hidden empire costs (like the supply line costs.), and AI oppenent incapable of invading planets. Pretty sure thats the major ones.

EDIT
I still want a 4X that starts off like the Civ series. 3k BCE, and then you take your empire into the galaxy and take over the galaxy.

What'd would be a nifty bonus would be if you could get an early or late start into galaxy conquering.

Emperor of the Fading Suns. The bastard child of Dune and WH40K. Turns and hexes. Also, abandonware, and ridden with bugs.
It can be played in single player mode, but due to aforementioned bugs, and atrocious AI, it gets boring fast. But in MP, it really shines.

Seriously, I have never had as much fun with any multiplayer game as I have had with this one.

Also, there's a game one of the forumties(Lap) is making, which is going to be the bestest 4X game ever.

EOFS was an insanely good game for its time. So much detail, conquering planets, but also controlling space.

Don't forget awesome mods. MOO3 was a horrible disappointment, but it is playable with some big mods. (Tropical etc.) I find Civ4 very boring, but FFH2/Fall Further makes it fun. I don't care about the whole cliche fantasy so much, but the different game mechanics make it worthwhile.

Oh and yeah, Alpha Centauri is the best. I just wish there was enforced map borders Civ4 style, I get pissed off by everyone scooting around on my territory. I never really got into GalCiv2. I appreciate the random events etc very much, but battles and tech tree are boring and the good/neutral/evil -thing seems out of place.

Anybody forget that old Space Empires series?  I remember in SE4 I was playing a game where sphereworlds were be destroyable.  The wormhole network was divided in twain, and I had to setup a large group of system-security gates to prevent any from being made to me.  They had 10x more planets than I, so I had to figure something out.  So I set up a construction fleet that would create a star, dyson it, blow it up, and do that over and over again, to make rubble fields, which I would then later on condense into planets.  This was expensive.

I liked the SE games, but initially I had a lot of trouble finding a decent setup that didn't overpower someone.
