Dynasty Games
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:41:03 pm »

I enjoy playing as a dynasty... Having children grow, parents die, and so on.
Great games I have played include
  • Crusader Kings
  • The Sims
  • The Guild II
Less great games include dynasty elements but without much character importance or differentiation:
  • EU:Rome
  • EU3
  • some of the total war games
  • df, to an extent (but I've never seen a child grow to have children of its own)

What are some other games where you play as a dynasty?
I need more.

Sword of the Samurai let you play on as your child if you died, which was pretty rad.

Watching this to see what else pops up--I like this in games too. Actually, I'd be interested in anything with a 'persistant world' in general.

Medieval Total War (1 and 2) had a line of succession where rulership would pass from father to son and the male members of the family were generals or governers while the females, especially princesses, could be wed to your enemies to forge alliances or married off to your non-family generals as a reward.

Knights Of Honor would also qualify for this.

Or atleast.. you dont play as the king himself but you can decide which of your sons can be king,
marry them into another kingdom to gain parts of their land and their sons, and even their sons.

Be careful however, if the king dies and he has no heirs, one of your generals might decide the throne should be his.
Altough this might be a good thing as it lets you continue to play.
However should that general be a spy from another kingdom..

I wouldn't call the Guild 2 great.

It's got a great concept that's executed rather poorly, even without the tons and tons of bugs.

It is still one of the few games that I regularly reinstall and play. Despite the bugs, the poor design, and the interface I play the hell out of that game every 4-5 months.

I love the game, too bad the bugs outright keep me from playing it.

You can only call the development team stupid when stuff like that happens. Did you really need all those new jobs and buildings? You couldn't of spent that time fixing bugs?

Same, no matter what you say about the execution and the bugs, it's a great fun game. If the entire company was replaced by modders the game would probably be a bestseller.

I mean we're talking about a game where I can poison the mayor, sleep with his wife, and murder his children because he DARED to insult me.

Then I can bribe his subordinates, have him voted out of office, take his place, and banish him from the town.

And then burn down his house.

And, when the inevitable lawsuit occurs, murder the plaintiff and, somehow, be considered a law-abiding person.

I think Elona has a system were you can have heirs and play as them and pass your equipment down to them.
