The Plagues Have Begun

Over the last couple days, near the middle of the United States, there have been a rash of mass die-offs in specific animal populations.  First, on New years Eve, a couple thousand birds dropped out of the sky in Arkansas.  By the next morning, hundreds of thousands of fish croaked in a river 125 miles away.  Today, hundreds of dead birds rained from the sky in Louisiana.

Wildlife officials are utterly baffled.  In at least the case of the fish, whatever killed them only effected one species in a habitat known to contain many.  The birds are harder to guess at, being in the air and all.  I'm putting my money on aliens at the moment, because really what the fuck is going on?

I was going to suggest localized magnetic field variations but there doesn't appear to be any evidence that the fish are at all sensitive to that sort of thing.

The simple solution is a die-off triggered from pesticide or industrial chemical use - not sure precisely where on the food chain the fish are but if they're sufficiently high up it's possible they're the only species that received a high enough dose to kill them.

Yeah but, a hundred thousand of them in one day?  In one location?  And just that one species?  I don't anything about "drum fish", but the simple solution sounds fishy to me.

In the pictures they look pretty small, so I would assume they sit pretty low on the food chain.

The military never says anything about aliens. It keeps conspiracy theorists convinced that they are hiding aliens, and so not focusing on their other, real, activities.

The mass death of the fish was said to be not all that uncommon in the area. If anything, I call coincidence.

What the hell? 2000 birds in one day? Jeez, that's crazy. It's like, some aliens visited our planet and fired several missiles at the flocks or something. Well, either that or a random Phalanx CIWS' went on crack and decided to fire everything.
