Occasionally, the magma pools (the pipes) extend past the mountain and up into the sky by itself. But this seems different; is the pipe filled with magma? (hard to tell from picture)

Sure. Because of the way terrain is generated really tall mountains always have square or squarish bases.

Wait, by 181 z-levels high, do you mean it's 181 levels from base to peak, or the peak is at level 181?

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I have a glacier embark like this; two 114-zlevel mountains, square bases complete with paths between them, that flank an empty volcano cone that is 60% ice, with the magma sitting just below the glacier sheet level.

Also don't be surprised if you find a huge 90z+ cavern somewhere, I found they are common around volcanoes ;D

Twenty seconds after the collapse, 14 dwarves hit the ground simultaneously.
EDIT: make that 15. Not sure what took that last one so long.

Volcanoes come in some really odd shapes, some of them just about impossible to work with.

I've only been noticing this recently - and only with magma pipes or drastic elevation changes.
