Eternal Youth
« on: March 23, 2008, 01:56:00 pm »

It sounds like a good thing, be a child forever! But, not in this case. I have two migrant children who came to my fortress as children some 18 years ago, and are STILL children today. It's rather funny because they have 6x legendary adult dwarves, who have been so for 10 years now as ' Younger Siblings '. They both came with the same parents, they just plain never seem to grow up.

One is legendary from a mood with tons of social skills and about 40 friends, the other just has tons of social skills ( More than enough to be elected my mayor if he ever grows up, actually a bad thing since he likes crystal glass ) and nearly legendary grower. The only thing i've modded is when children grow up, and it was modded before I even generated the world. All the same, it COULD have something to do with it, although i've used the same change in all of my other games and had no problems with migrant children growing up.

Additionally, I'm gonna go ahead and bump this with a slightly related bug: Children completely ignore restricted movement like animals do. I have an extremely fertile mother of something like 40 kids, she's unfortunately also a legendary siege operator.... With one eye. She has killed atleast 7 of her own kids and multiple haulers attempting to remove the hundreds of bodyparts left over when one of those 100 lb steel tipped masterwork ballista arrows rips through them.

There's no way for me to stop this inevitable train wreck, I know if she has a child and I have to fire the ballista i'd better have a coffin ready.. And maybe a bin to carry all the bodyparts to the coffin. It seems like the standard place to stand out of all the area around the ballista is the big red FORBIDDEN area on top of the ballista arrowhead.

If they set their standing points on top of the red area (which isn't forbidden, just higher movement cost), they will go ahead and do that, and they want a standing point near their mother.

I'll take a look at the old children save if you've got one.  Probably some variable that wasn't set.

Rapidshare sucks ass, but it's all I know of. I included the error log as it's abnormally large.. I've never seen one so big before. Also in this save you can see some irremovable/unusable ropes up at the fort entrance. Not sure what happened with those but I had some animals on them that were disemboweled and thrown about 10 squares back into the bridge by a ballista bolt so maybe that has something to do with it. The children are Shorast and Zulban.

Scratch the ropes thing, Looks like they were inadvertantly forbidden.

You can put the ballista indoors behind a fortification, the children should stay on the same side of the wall as the mother.

I have, and do. Doesn't stop them from standing on the tip of the arrow and getting fed through the fortifications in 30 different peices.

Actually, yeah, the mod probably had something to do with it.  I don't think it respects mods when it sets migrant child ages, so they probably just missed their birthdays (if you lowered the age).  They'll grow up on their next birthday in the next version.

My ballista practice range doubles as a blood drenched meat grinder of woe for tamed pets.

Yeah, there is a door with pets restricted, but they slip in anyway.  They go in whole, once, they go out in pieces.
