You could think that, but like I said, based on my experience with BF2, it works.

There, the senior ranked players had first choice of whether or not they wanted to be the commander. Everyone puts in their bid blind, and it choose the highest rank among the bidders.

So you'd think you'd never get to be commander. But as you get up in levels, higher ranks started getting rarer and rarer. And some people just didn't want commander to begin with.

Hopefully it just doesn't automatically make the highest ranked person the hero. Looking visually distinct, that'd probably be something people would want to be able to opt out of. Maybe there's different heroes per class, meaning a bunch of people get the chance to be heroes per match, and not just the two highest ranked people.

There's also something called a battlefield commendation (or promotion), which is basically a temporary rank up you earn in a match for exceptional performance. That might get some people to the hero level when they might not have otherwise.

There will always be limitations in RO though. RO: Ostfront has limits on class types, with snipers at a default of 1 per team. That's just something you have to accept with TWI games, they don't want games where everyone is lopsidedly picking one class. Likewise, they want veteran players to reap the benefits of their time. Heroes should be the goal for all players, but not all players should get to be heroes all the time. I really think, despite how much heroes seem they're going to get, that they're going to be a minor part of the game by and large. Depending on when people become heroes, no one might even see them for a month or more. (Doubt it, but you never know.)

Once you've got the rank, you can just hop on to any server and probably have a good chance of being the hero. We like to think FPS populations all rank up together....but playing BC2, I see newbies every single day. Hopefully ROHOS does well enough it doesn't get stuck with an uber veteran population, and the occasional poor sucker just trying the game....as RO: Ostfront has kind of become.

I've been thinking about the hero thing. The hero should be chosen the best player determined by combination of his ranking and previous scores on played maps in the session. And all the hero should have is different appearance as the rest of players.
Sometimes when i was only spectate the match, i found the best player and watched him and let me tell you, most of the time he was doing awesome. If the guy had hero appearance i would stick close to him no passive bonuses needed.

I think that we'll have to wait until we nee more "hero" gameplay, or for the game to be released before I make a judgement on whether or not this "hero" thing is good or bad. All I know is that more Red Orchestra means more awesome.

Funilly enough, I looked at Kotaku for the first time in a month or so, and there was an article on how people were moving away from WWII games and making "modern combat" games... obviously they don't know anything aboooot RO

The only thing the heros do is limit the supprision effect a bit capture points a bit faster and get better weapons. The better weapons thing seems to mean they might get a more powerful scope as a sniper or a choice between a belt and a drum as an MG or a drum instead of sticks as an SMGer. It isnt supposed to be an extreme thing.

Here's another lengthy dev interview and time with the current build of RO2. Forgive the interviewer, he's not exactly prepared with good questions, interview skills or a firm understanding of the game. But there's a lot of game play footage to digest.

The AI looks very bad, fortunately its not about that but singleplayer will be kinda dumb if AI stays like that.

The AI is left over from Unreal Tournament.
But yes, if they keep it the way it is now....

EDIT: The AI was like this in RO, as well. If they're thinking aboooot making any kind of single player aspect other than 'practice' mode then they need to do something abooot it.

Well, he did say he's playing on the easiest difficulty level. And it's not exactly the kind of shooter where you can just give the AIs more HP and damage with higher difficulty level. Might be typical "This will be better before the game is out! Really!" talk from his side, though. So I dunno.

EDIT: You need to watch the new videos. As someone who has played Red Orchestra I have to say, the new features and improvements are incredibly bitchin'

(I think it would do them good if when they use 'interaction points' on tanks and such that looking around gives a better view by moving the head and body around as if using TrackIR and not just the camera.)

EDIT2: AI still hasn't been fixed though, Fingers crossed.

EDIT3: Near the end of video 2: the main menu reminds me of the Soldiers at War box art.
