D&D with the skulking filth
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:18:01 am »

Tonight I'm starting a Dwarf Fortress inspired d&d mini-campaign.
The players are playing assorted goblins, kobolds and things of a similar bent, sent to ambush a dwarven fortress. Any suggestions for encounters I might throw in?
So far, they'll definately be turning up alongside an elven caravan, meet a huntsdwarf with his many hunting dogs, suffer a trap corridor, walk straight into the barracks, and it'll end with the goblins saving the world from the dwarves digging too deep.

Something involving magma, of course. And maybe a tantrum spiral to dodge.

Forest fires, magma traps, angry overseers, wild animals, caravan guards, other traps, miners that can 1-hit KO enemies, moats, fortification towers, being dropped down into a gladiator pit, any other forseable deaths...

They should probably end up fighting the clowns themselves, or maybe the dwarves will accept their help in disposing of them.

Think of it like Sim City, except with rival mayors that seek to destroy your citizens by arming legions of homeless people and sending them to attack you.

Generate a world, save the picture of the map ("p" at the end of map generation), and look at the histories, then use that as your D&D world.

Also, what version D&D are you using? I prefer to play v2 (AD&D).

You could let them stumble into the Magma-smithy (which curiosly enough was closed with a floodgate) where they encounter a Magma-men. The smythy itself would be a good place to reward them with Armor and weapons. If they go through the caverns to get out of the fort you can lead them right into a underdark campaign - well after sending them though a complete snake-men tribe.

The plumbing system for the irrigation and indoor waterfall(s) as well as the obsidian/basalt farm could be a cool side-dungeon including a big mechanical calculators for timing of these contraptions.

You need a bear trap.

And by bear trap I mean a trap involving bears.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

A pressure plate releasing a whole zoo from one cage straight at the goblins. Bears, tigers, giant eagles, elephants, etc.

They are all going to die. None will make it through the trap corridor.

To make things at least feasible, have a huge, partially constructed megaproject of some kind that they can enter through. One that would be impermeable if it were finished, but... it's not finished.

That's the best idea ever.  I might have to yoink that the next time I run a game. ;)

You should find some way to set a dwarf on fire and have him nonchalantly go get a drink at the booze stockpile.
