Or perhaps a theme that looks like it on a newer windows... (XP has "windows classic style" for windows and buttons)

Also, that problem is much simpler if you look at it differently, for example as creating and joining two CH. Then you can split that horrible tangle into two clean and non-overlapping lines...

It is better than average at both running time and symbols, but could easily be optimized by remembering that it allows different shapes, so doesn't need those rotations.[/spoiler]

I wanted to see it in action, and its much better than my solution.

XP's default "teletubby" theme makes me twitch. It's a computer, not a mac :P

I rather like my tangles :3 My design is very synchronous - the sync at the end is only a small wait for blue.

God this game is terribly addictive.  But the one thing that bugs me are the statistical breakdowns of how I did.  Not because it's not working or anything, but rather that it makes me feel inadequate.  I've optimized "Sleepless on Sernimir IV" three times now, and that got me into the 900-1000 range (982) but I still have too many symbols (50).  I can't think of any way to make it more efficient!

Is there some concept I'm missing that simplifies everything?

You will never have a solution that is optimal in both symbols and cycles. Often you can get both below average, but, as shown in the optimal solutions for the codex of alchemical engineering, the fastest solutions tend to be somewhat complex, and the minimalist solutions tend to be slower.

Someone, seriously... post your solution for "No Thanks Necessary" on Alkonost.

I am dying here.

I would, but I'm not quite there yet.  Though I have to say, for one of the more frustrating games I've ever played I find the draw of it immense.  I'm sitting here at work wishing I could install it.  Or, you know, play it.

Also, last night I reached my first challenge level.  I loaded it up fully intent to play it.  Instead I stared at the requirements for a moment, closed the game, and went to lay down.  Is it me, or does the difficulty level seem to expand geometrically?

(edited to avoid double-post)

I'll have pictures of each reactor up in just a minute...

Yeah, these pictures are huge, sorry.

WTF. I swear the difficulty of the game just elevated like 10 times.

I thought the game was easy until I got to Acetylene... wtf... It's probably too late for my brain to work this thing around... but... here's my formaldehyde solution:

Huh, my own solution was somewhat different. I made H2C in the first reactor and then tacked on the Oxy at the end.

Also seems I got a screenshot of my volume changing. Haha

Thanks, I figured out what to do from the pics. I didn't use your solution exactly but mine was close. :)

Yeah, Danopth is where the game kicks off in difficulty.

I'm currently ripping my hair out over "More than machine" on Hephaesus IV, I mean come on, that huge molecule is pure evil   :(

Edit: ARGH! I actually made a reactor setup that gets the laser to fire, but now if fires when the monster is in the wrong place, and I have no reactors left to use as a trigger.  :'(

This is how I did More then a machine.

Waldo A is to fire the laser. Be careful to not put more then 1 in there. Also mind the long reload time of the laser itself.

Edit: changed image 4 to thumbnail.

That first reactor of mine could use some tweaking, or could be broken up into two reactors to make it more cycle-efficient. The only reason I have it in that one is because of the challenge for the level previous. And I liked it so much I just used it again. haha

EDIT:

OH MY GOD EMPTY Your loops to determine which molecule spawned in the first thumbnail is genius! I couldn't figure out how to get a different waldo to handle a different molecule gracefully. You're awesome.

Wait, but does your laser constantly fire? Here's what I did to stop that from happening...

Better yet, instead of that circular loop, you could just make the arrow go straight back to the control test.
