Ok, so I downloaded the game, joined the Tymas Confed... some crazy blue guy was talking to me, I was getting like 2 FPS, there was no ground textures, and some bird was beating the shit out of me...

Pretty standard start, the ground missing is probably your video card, and it's pretty resource intensive even though it looks like crap.

well how about a desktop? I'm getting a new gfx card for it (well it's AGP but still  ) and later still a whole new comp.

If you have Intel, you're boned. It'll probably never be supported. Or if it is, it'll be way later when we actually have graphics options, I.E. turning off shaders.

If you just typed it in, you were dumped in a random empire. For anyone looking to join any invite or request only empires, you have to start into the game in any random empire, then get into chat and get someone from the empire you want into to invite you in. Typing in the name of an invite or request empire won't get you in it, although Haxus really needs to get a more elegant solution to that.
