So far the goal was just to build up and be a competitive force in the galaxy, but many of us have gotten a bit burnt out on the game due to bugs and such. Still active players around, though.

I'm still around, but have been pretty inactive the last two or three weeks busy with other things. I plan to get back into the game soon, after I'm finished with some RL obligations.

Does anyone know what became of the B12 coalition last year?

I believe it largely died off.

I think there are three large B12 or B12-related empires currently: Starborn Dominion (from these forums), The Council (from the Bay12 IRC), and I believe Tymas (Creodor and his associates) counts themselves as being from B12 or B12-related (I'm not familiar with the origins of their members).

It would appear that the "Rik'Tan Hegemony" have started colonising near part of my space, after they were attacked by Tymas. If anyone could lend a hand (even if it is letting my colonise near the B12 section, in relative safety) that would be awesome. I also have some shiny TL21 uni tech (and various other 10-12 Tech things). And an alliance with my great (small) personal empire.

Dragunas Dominus. It seems like it's relative close to the center of civilization(located in Bolmir's Folly sector), but most chat messages come from >10 parsecs, and I have carved a path via wormholes to seemingly uncolonized space.

I just checked my citizen list. Hem, you're not on it. Did you accidentally join "Dragunas"(without the "Dominus" part), by any chance? It's what I intended to have, but it locked up during empire creation and I couldn't use it.
