I got a great Katana from my parents this Christmas, it's high quality stuff with stingray skin and everything. Problem is, I'm going off to college in Boston next year this year and the dorms won't allow me to have it.

Me and my parents currently live in California, and I don't want to leave it with them. Is there some way I can safely store my blade in Boston without using an expensive SDB?

A good (IE "real") Katana takes advantage of both high and low carbon steel. The real quality is in the metallurgy and forging. Else it's just a cool-looking mantelpiece for geeks. And just because they claim it's Damascus (or just "folded") steel, that actually means it can be of lower durability than if it weren't.

Statistically, IE factoring in that it's probably not of authentic metallurgy and forging, your prized Katana is likely to shatter within it's first dozen demonstrations. Even if it's against soft flesh.

From my perspective your sword is... it is the equivalent of say... a decorative lamp your parents gave you for your birthday that are particularly fond of the looks. It's decorative. Get over it. *Do note I had the "this isn't what you want to hear" disclaimer at the top, and note that I do not share the same fascination as you.

Put it in a box, tape it up.
Bring it to your dorm and place it under your bed and never open it.
The box will remain a mystery and you will not be punished.

My experience with college in Boston was that everyone had a lot of things they weren't allowed to have in their dorm rooms. We weren't particularly sneaky either, so you should be fine if you just package it up and never unpack it.

Yes it's a "replica," in that if you were actually going to use it for chopping people it'd be all "Shit nooo you'll make me chip!" Still, it's a really good replica that I'd like to hang up on my wall, not because it was hand forged by some Japanese Artisan on the slopes of mount fuji, but because my parents gave it to me as a sign of trust.

EDIT:To clarify, I'm not referring my college dorm room wall, lol.

You know... if you just put the sword in a box and put the box somewhere completely out of the way such as the attic... your parents won't even touch it.

Though it would need to be a box made out of paper made out of bamboo from the deepest forests of China.

... I brought my wooden and bamboo practice weapons to campus when I went to college.  You can, in fact, either kill or severely incapacitate someone with those.  Left them in plain sight by my bed and/or under a bookshelf.  No one bothered me about them, and I worked out with them regularly.

When I was in eighth grade and on a class field trip, some guy came up to the door I was sharing with some other girls and started screaming, throwing himself at the door, punching it, and shouting "let me in!  Let me in!"  It was pretty scary.  I managed to get him to go away by out-shouting him, but I would've felt a lot better if I'd had something on hand--just in case.

The reason may be different, but hell... I brought that stuff with me for two reasons: first off, I thought it was kind of cool (could be a conversation piece or something--shh, I was naive back then), and second off, I really wanted to have it around.  It's one of those things.

Eh.  Long story, I guess.  In any case, I don't see why we should mock him for wanting to have his weaponry nearby.  No, it's not a "real" weapon.  Who cares?  It's his stuff, and he didn't ask "should I have weapons in the same city as myself," he said "Do you know any good places to store swords."

Designate a weapon stockpile deep within your home and once the sword has been moved there, forbid it.

I would imagine that the sword probably wouldn't shatter and would more likely bend, since it would be made out of a low carbon steel. Then again, it may be made out of high carbon steel, maybe not Japanese style, if you have expensive furnishings for it, it's likely that it has a decent blade. A few years ago here in New Zealand, we had a guy go on a meth rage and kill his girlfriend with a katana, so they can be dangerous weapons.

The temptation to show it to someone if you kept it under your bed might be too much, although a cardboard packaging tube would be ideal if you went this route. Long narrow boxes under your bed scream "gun". However you store it long-term, you need to keep it out of the scabbard (it retains moisture) and in a dry place to keep the blade from pitting. Wipe the blade down very lightly with gun oil (or whatever fancy shit you'd rather waste money on) and make sure its prefectly clean when it goes into storage. If you actually have it on hand in the dorm, put a sock on the doorknob once a month or so and wipe it down in privacy.

Alternately drop it in a barrel of diesel oil and bury it in the backyard. Works for firearms.
