There is no oxygen in oil, unlike water, oil dosn't desolve gasses very well, so if you keep something submerjed in oil, it will never tarnish.

The only exption to this rule is in magical rivers in elven forests, were elves leave there swords for one hundred years untill the river polishes them to be a sharp as steel. So careful next time you cross a river where your local elves hang out.

Coat the sword liberally in gun grease. As for its scabbard, coat liberally in armor-all. Store in a airtight container, should keep well , until graduation

Or you could ask a god living inside a cliff face to hold it for you untill the day a righteous man comes to claim it.

Blank stare? How do you think I'm storing my M 1919A1 30 cal machine gun? Sticking it in a box labeled "Not Illegal"?

I'm assuming for collecting purposes, since there are a large number of more devastating and less expensive weapons available today if it were for actual defense.
And seriously, guns really aren't that terrifying. You don't have to be a psychopath to own one. More people are killed by swimming pools.

Yeah, same reason he has a katana. Besides, swords are way more dangerous to children. I have to be a responsible parent.

My dad has many guns in our house. Just follow the rules and it's not a big deal.

Here is an interesting Wikipedia article about gun crimes. Not counting wars, look at the 'firearm homicides per 100,000 people' column. That alone probably outstrips swimming pools by far. Bring it, fishman!
