Traditionally you could start with the first of the Discworld books: color of magic, but I also recommend starting with Guards! Guards! too if you want to jump straight into the Beast that is Samuel Vimes.

IMO starting at any book is OK, Terry is great at not leaving new readers hanging.

I prefer either chronological or published order for the most part. I don't really like reading the middle of a series.

IMO, he doesn't really get into the swing of things for the first few books. They're a bit different than the others. Starting with Guards! Guards! is a great spot.

To me the oldest books show a world that is in my opinion, different to the newer books.
