I've recently been having trouble with my Computer my old one that is, i realised that most PC games that take up the whole screen get stuck on a single image. Like a logo for instance. But i can hear audio in the background but no video.

Stats :

Compaq Presario Intel (R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz
512mb of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3400 series

thats weird your specs should run the game normally, can you post your settings files.

It could be operating system. Toady recently switched over to a new compiler.

It could also be the RAM. Dwarf Fortress takes up quite a bit.

The RAM is probably the issue, can't run many things with less than a gigabyte nowadays.

truth, DF takes 512mb of ram all by itself for me. get some more ram, 2gb would be enough for ya.

but he would have blue screen if the ram was used up..... did your computer blue screened josh?

Comrade Josh have you tried using different settings? Try downloading vanilla DF and perhaps one of the lazy newbie packs and see if the behavior is the same. Your RAM might be a little low, though I do have an intel atom laptop with 1gb memory and DF runs ok. It's slow, but it runs.

3400 series huh, that's the kinda gpu I had until 2 days ago (my package from newegg arrived that I spent my Christmas money on )

Am I correct in assuming that DF is not the only game that this happens on?  I hear that there is a kind of virus that does that.

If that's not the case, you might try updating your graphics drivers, it could just be that your driver went bad somehow and that's causing issues.  If you have the drivers on a disk that came with the card that will do too. 

Really it's just reinstalling the driver that needs to be done if that's the problem, but if you end up needing to download them from the ATI site might as well get the newest available that works for 3400.  And since it's an ATI it may want to give you catalyst control center as well.  That is a nice toy, and gives you some extra control over your card. but isn't necessary.

And the last thing is to try is a different card.  But that is tricky since most <normal> people don't have extra computer parts lying around.  But your 3400 might just be on it's way out and need replaced.
